I hope folks will forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but one image =/= a sprite. You need at least 500 hundred other images before they can be sprites. :P

And while a lot of them look great, there is no more confirmation of their future inclusion than the images of Chang, Malin and Momoko were.

The subject of that section is Arcade Version -> Climax version. So most of the changes are probably already known.

SNK Games / Re: Wait... what? This game was made by SNK?
« on: April 23, 2012, 10:25:45 PM »
So you're assuming that, because Zelda is a successful series, SNK screwed up by not making more of them?

That's kind of silly. Firstly, there are many series similar to Zelda, and there have been even more games similar to it. Not all of them have been successful, and fewer still have survived until today. Secondly, the biggest problem SNK ever faced financially was the transition to 3D games. Just because Zelda was able to manage this transition successfully doesn't mean Crystalis would have. There are countless examples of other successful (2D) franchises that received disastrous 3D versions.

You also seem to be forgetting that, before success of the DS and Wii, Nintendo's future wasn't always so "secure." Even Capcom, with its numerous blockbuster IPs (RE, SF, Mega Man) has a gloom surrounding it these days.

It's foolish to think there are any shortcuts to financial security.

Results / Re: DC KOF XIII Online Tournament (3-17-2012) Results
« on: March 18, 2012, 07:24:33 PM »
Thanks for your hard work, Solid Shark. It was a lot of fun.  :) I must have really lucked out, because all of my matches felt pretty smooth, despite some of them being 2-lines. Only one of them was slow enough to throw off a few of my combos.

A correction: Looking at the results, Calibur should have 4 points, right?

Has anybody read this yet
http://ratbagqueer.wordpress.com/2012/03/10/kof-xiii/

in the jungle stage those look like primates then "black" people, Marco don't look like any of them

Shame on you for giving him more traffic. :P

But in all honesty, you know KOF has hit the big time when even non-fans are writing long diatribes on the game.

Except that they have a very big roster and to even make visuals on part with Tekken isn't anything but easy.

Look at how well Samsho Sen turned out. Now add the next generation and you've got even more trouble. Not to mention how many of their staff are even well versed in the new HD generation of visuals? It's been some time since Reg. A came out and like I've said before, it wasn't exactly a stunner when it first came out.

SamSho Sen was developed by K2, not SNKP.

If the graphics can't be Soul Calibur V or Tekken 6 quality, it doesn't mean the game is doomed. They could always release it on XBLA and PSN. I'm not saying they should or would, mind you. Just saying they could.

As for their future plans with this, I don't think it'll come back. It's already been years since the last game and making a new set of HD models would be too much for SNK to compete with the like of SF and TK. And if they wait to the next generation it'd only be worse. They'd end up doing the same thing they did with KOFXII and have a weak roster with butchered movesets. Their best bet maybe the 3DS or the Vita if that's possible.

I agree that they're probably not planning to bring the series back, but I'd disagree on one point. Making an HD Maximum Impact wouldn't be nearly as much work as making XII was. The animations themselves could be ported over as-is (even if they're a bit stiff), and simply given new skins. In fact, they're already creating new 3D models for use in animating XII/XIII's sprites. So, yeah, they could just make some HD character models and copy/paste the animations.

But yes, it would still cost money. And yes, they've probably buried the series.

I loved the MI series, and it's goofy/awesome combos and goofy/awesome bonuses. I agree its dial-a-combos were a bit much, and would have loved to see it evolve into a RB-ish system.

I'm really happy with the patch. The thing I wanted most was the ability to play only 3 and 4-bar ranked matches, in addition to player matches.

I don't know if the Northwest is really getting into KOF or what, but I haven't had any trouble (yet) finding matches. Of course it varies by time of day, but I typically don't have to wait more than a minute or two in practice mode.

Anyway, the 4 bar match I played post-patch was as good as the 4 bar matches I played pre-patch. Not surprising.

Obviously, I don't have to play 1 bar matches ever again (which I'm thrilled about), but I wanted to see how the game handled bad connections now. The 1 bar matches I played (someone invited me to it) felt very different from the pre-patch 1 bar matches I've played. It seemed like the game felt less like it was underwater, and the game seemed to be running more smoothly. However, the input delay was absolutely absurd. My impression was that SNKP tried to mask the bad connection with more input lag, while trying to keep the game's speed consistent.

In my opinion, this is a worse solution than just slowing the game down.

As I said, though, the good news for me is that I can now avoid the truly awful matches. All in all, I'm happy.

General Discussion / Re: Better Starter: Duo Lon or Mature?
« on: January 27, 2012, 09:07:08 PM »
By "starter" character, you mean a battery (i.e. the first character in your team), right? Or do you mean a character for a player new to KOF?

Regardless, I'm going to give a cop-out answer and tell you to try learning both. You need to get good with three characters anyway, so I don't see how trying to learn four characters is unreasonable. Which character you prefer largely depends on your own playstyle anyway.

SNK Games / NeoGeo Pocket Returns (!?!?)
« on: January 25, 2012, 10:24:28 AM »
Not sure what to make of this news. Adriasang reports:

Quote from: Andriasang
Following its first failed attempt with Neo Geo Pocket, SNK is lending its name to a new portable gaming device.

Famicom Plaza has a look at at the new device, which carries official licensing from SNK Playmore. The device, currently going by the placeholder name of "Neo Geo Portable Device," has 4.3 inch screen, two gigabytes of internal storage, and ships with 20 Neo Geo classics built in:

    1.WORLD HEROES
    2.ULTIMETE 11
    3.TOP PLAYER'S GOLF
    4.SENGOKU
    5.NAM-1975
    6.MUTATION NATION
    7.LAST RESORT
    8.KING OF MONSTERS
    9.FRENZY
    10.CYBER LIP
    11.FATAL FURY SPECIAL
    12.ART OF FIGHTING
    13.SUPER SIDEKICKS
    14.LEAGUE BOWLING
    15.METAL SLUG
    16.MAGICAL LORD
    17.BASEBALL STARS PROFESSIONAL
    18.SAMURAI SHODOWN
    19.KING OF FIGHTERS '94
    20.FATAL FURY

The games are all the North American versions with English.

According to the Famicom Plaza report, the device is 170x72x15mm and is a bit larger than an iPhone-like smartphone. It has a 2200mAh battery.

Controls on the device include four face buttons, a d-pad, four shoulder buttons, a menu button, a start button, and buttons for volume and brightness. Ports include headphones, AV and an SD.

No details yet on pricing or release date. Famicom Plaza's report does not list the maker.

So, it's not actually a new NeoGeo Pocket, but a handheld that emulates NeoGeo games.

My interest in the device will depend on:

1. Are the built games the only ones I can ever play, or can I download others? SD card and 2GB internal memory certainly suggest yes.

2. Is the joystick as good as the NeoGeo Pocket?

3. How does multiplayer work?

4. Price, obviously.

General Discussion / Re: Survival mode strategies?
« on: January 24, 2012, 07:10:34 AM »
I used Clark, but didn't use any special strategies. Only reason I chose Clark is because he can destroy the bosses pretty easily. B SAB destroys Saiki, and EX Gatling Attack makes short work of Dark Ash.

Other than that, just keep track of AI's meter, and play more cautiously when they have 3 bars + full stocks. But if you're keeping your health up, even a random NeoMax shouldn't be enough to KO you.

Keep at it. It's doable.

@Aenthin: I think that's everyone.

I have a quick question. You can't Drive Cancel on a guarding opponent, but what about on guard point?

Any friend of Todo's is a friend of mine.  :)

Welcome to DreamCancel and to KOF. I main Terry because his pressure game is really fun, his combos are easy to hit-confirm (plus look great), and he's an all-around cool dude.
