Training Room / Re: I need help with a practice regimen
« on: April 07, 2013, 09:15:43 AM »
Well I attended my first local "casual" in KC. As I thought, I got blown up. I don't mind losing. I know I am going to lose a lot. I expect it. I was also against really good players. It is really nerve wracking asking to have next when KC's best KOF players are playing. The only way to get better is by playing better players! That is my motto!

Every loss is an opportunity to learn... but I really don't know what to practice now that I am home. I got a couple words of advice and not an in depth explanation. "You should guard cancel roll" or "try CD" after getting OCD'ed each match doesn't help me mentally match my actions at a particular point to the advice given after the two games have ended... No disrespect to the guys in the group though. They are not there to hold my hand.

I feel like all the time I spent in the lab left me like a jittery college that crammed before a final exam and choked then flunked. I spent a lot of time in practice mode. I don't know how many times I nailed cr.B, c.B, df.D, hcb.B, st.C but as soon as I was on deck to play, I couldn't land a single hit confirm.

I focused completely on King to shore up my fundamentals but I looked like I never played a fighting game in my life!

^Which game in the series do you like the most?
That's a tough one. Metal Slug 2 and X where good. However my fav has to be Metal Slug 1 because that's the one I sank the most quarters into on an old Neo Geo MVS. Lots of nostalgic memories :)

I'm going to customize the art on my SFxT Pro stick with a Metal Slug theme. I don't like SFxT and the art is ugly so it's mod time!

I've been taking these tips to heart

http://shoryuken.com/2011/11/29/six-psychological-tips-to-help-you-level-up-your-game-faster-part-1/

Hops are coming a bit easier every day I practice. My daily warm up is 10 of each special in a row without a missed input. If I miss an input even if it's the 9th venom strike, I start over again.

I took the advice here on DC and used King as a dummy and set her to CPU. It can sure be challenging to read what kind of venom strike she is about to use! Is there some kind of telegraph to tip me off when she might use the slow  ;b version or the fast  ;d version?

I also used the record function for the first time a couple nights ago! This tool is amazing! I don't think any other fighting game has this! I recorded King sending out  ;d venom strike then ;b venom strike dash into j.CD. It was tough for me to counter lol. I will be using this tool a lot!

As for spacing and keep away I found CPU Benimaru a good training dummy. Lots of hop-in attacks and he tries to get you into the corner. Great way to practice anti air. I make it into my own mini game of how many times I can counter hit or evade without getting hit by his combos.

I turned on the input display to help diagnose my problem. I realized I was spazing out on the buttons so fast I was trying to force the hcb from df.D and pressing  ;b before the hcb even completed. The input looked like ;d,  ;df ;d then instead of letting the stick back to neutral I'd try to force the hcb only to get jumbled input like   ;dn ;df ;fd ;dn ;df  ;b ;db ;bk  (which is why I got trapshot)

Or sometimes it would be ;d ;df ;d ;df  ;dn ;df ;fd ;d ;df ;dn ;db ;bk  (held df too long, then tried to start the hcb only to push the button too soon and get a venom strike with a bunch of useless inputs afterwards)

Turning on the input display has helped a lot. Calming down and remembering to complete my circle motions before touching a button has been hard for me. I played a bunch of MK9 before coming to KoF and everything was dial a combo. Negative edge would mean mashing a combo in the wrong order still made the combo come out! KoF is definitely making me a better fighter just by not being so lenient on timing.

I'm having trouble getting King's j.D cl.D df+D -> hcb+B

Over all I have problems trying to cancel anything into or out of Tornado Kick '95. Usually Trap Shot pops out or a Venom Strike. Any tips on making these fundamental moves easier to execute? Even with inputs shown in screen I seem to do things wrong...

Also, is it possible to hit with a  ;d Venom Strike in air after a j.CD when it is NOT a counter hit?

I noticed something about how I play. For the most part my primary focus is on my own character. I usually see the opponent in my peripheral vision. Is this a habit to break? Should I instead have my vision "centered" on the opponent and use peripheral vision to see what my own character is doing?

Pro-Gear / Changing button colors on MadCatz SFxT Pro Line

I want to swap out the buttons on my stick to correspond with the standard button colors here on dream cancel.
 ;a ;c
 ;b ;d

Can I just swap out the plungers instead of buying whole new buttons?

http://www.focusattack.com/mix-match-sanwa-obsf-30mm-plunger-dark-red/

They are out of green whole buttons but not out of the plungers. Anyone have a video link on how I would go about swapping out the plungers?

Training Room / I need help with a practice regimen
« on: March 26, 2013, 06:35:37 PM »
I want to start hitting the dojo to help me with my fundamentals. I'm thinking about King on point, Mr. Karate as the battery with Claw Irori as anchor.

What is a good practice routine? Every time I use practice mode I feel like I'm not practicing the right things. I feel like I can do some basic cancels like slide kick into trap shot (only to have venom strike come out instead). What should my daily fundamental routine be?

I'm thinking about starting with ten of each kind of jump without missing (10 hops, hyper hops, jumps and hyper jumps). And not moving on to other things until I can get 10 of each in a row without a single missed input. What should I do after hop practice? Should I focus on BnB's? Or should I try 10 of each special move without a missed input. Intellectually I know the inputs for Kings specials but I find myself missing Venom Strike and doing Trap Shot (and vice-versa) instead a lot of the time. I can also never seem to time Tornado Kick when I want it to come out. So I get punished when I try to use it as an anti-air. How do I practice guard cancel blowback?

Any advice on this? What are some of your daily practice routines?

Working with King on point. The rest are kind of in flux. I'm leaning toward EX Kyo as anchor but I've cycling through my 2nd character. I've tried Mr. Karate, Takuma, Iori and EX Iori.

Meet & Greet / Hello from KCMO

This is SuperVehicle001 saying hi from Kansas City Missouri. I took a strange path here to Dream Cancel. I've not been super into fighting games but I've owned a few. I tried getting better but even in casual play my friends always beat my ass at fighting games. Then I took a break from all gaming, a very long one.

Recently my cousin gave me his copy of Mortal Kombat 9. I fell in love with that series again. Which lead me to TestYourMight.com... which lead me to buy a stick, then more fighting games... which led me to shoryuken.com. Then I snapped up more current fighting games and one was of course KoF XIII. Which then led me here to Dream Cancel. This was all in the span of the last month or so.

KoF has always had a special place in my heart despite not playing it much. As a kid, once a year my family would have a reunion around christmas at some hotel in Wichita KS. The place sucked expect they had a MVS machine with KoF '96, Metal Slug (hence my addiction to that series) and Super Puzzle Bopple.

I want to get better, not for serious tournament competition. I don't have the time for that, but I'd like to get beyond button mashing.

Anyway I look forward to some great advice and fun times ahead here on Dream Cancel!
