I know that for sure at any height that you can cancel into it from a normal, it's safe, but I'll check maximum height... It might be punishable by some of the tallest characters like Maxima or Goro.

the wiki doesn't have his most effective pokes. personally i feel st.c is really good and st.d as an aa would i be right?

Well, in the section on normals certain ones are recommended as being strong pokes, but I can add something to the strategies section for good mid-range pokes. I can tell you right now that far C is great for range and the fact that it's cancellable into any special, but I'm pretty sure it can be crouched by anyone. For poking, crouching D is really amazing for its speed, range, knockdown and safety. It can be punished by hyperhops if you use it predictably, though. Standing B is really great since it's also cancellable to standing D, has good range and comes out rather quickly. Crouching B can be cancelled into standing B, which makes it a great option as well. Those are the ground pokes that I use mostly.

Oh C+D is heavy punch and heavy kick together, not both kicks, if that helps. Andy's air version hits very high above him and very low below him in the air, making it great for hitting moving targets, but you have to time it early because it has some start-up time.

hyperhop j.CD (jumping C+D) is really great, it has amazing priority and huge blockstun. During pressure that would be your jump-in of choice, but j.D is very good as well. His wiki page has a decent amount of info on it, it can be found here: http://dreamcancel.com/wiki/index.php?title=Andy_Bogard_%28XIII%29

In Climax they're going to increase Shen's meter gain on qcb+C, and right now the best thing I've seen it be usable for is getting out of Mai's Ryu-Enbu and then starting an HD combo from close C or something.

Wow, if those all get filled out I'm pretty sure it'll be the biggest page on the wiki. I'll certainly have some tips for certain matchups, but a good portion is going to stay blank for a long while, most likely.

That's a helluva risk to GCR a CD though.

Not really, GCR cannot be punished reliably in any way, so it's really just -1 meter. But still wasteful if baited.

I added some crossup setups to the wiki, http://dreamcancel.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hwa_Jai_%28XIII%29#Crossup_Setups but I'm sure there are more. These are just the ones that I know off the top of my head. If anyone else has any reliable ones I'd love to add them.

So I tested s.CD cancelled into drink on block against Shen and apparently the only move that Shen can even punish it with is his EXDM. It seems like it's actually a really viable strategy against most characters. I think I'll start abusing this technique a lot. What an easy way to get a drink in. The space it creates from max range is really insane... it pushes opponents back to over half of the screen away and there are only maybe 7-10 frames that Hwa can be punished within... and most characters can't cover that distance in that amount of time very well.

well... I just don't see C grab working as a tick throw since it has like 30+ frames of startup animation after the super flash. Maybe if it was used to beat an anticipated punish or something... but it can easily be reacted to and punished if you're not using it for its invulnerability. If you have a really interesting setup, then post it and maybe it'll be worth noting in the wiki.

And as for s.CD cancelled into drink, it'll probably work well against lots of characters, but like you said some can punish it for sure. I've done only a couple of times and I don't think I've been directly punished for it (when s.CD was max range), but I never really tested just how punishable it is. I can look into it.

Thanks, I hope people end up reading it, because right now Hwa is still kind of a mystery to most people.

yeah but you can't jump cancel your normals. If he autoguards a close C, f+B you'll not be able to get out of it with a jump. You CAN cancel it into an EX grab, though. Non-EX command grab is a bit too slow, you'll probably get thrown if you do that.

She recovers extremely quickly after throwing a fan. I would only punish a fan with qcfx2+AC, to be safe. qcfx2+AC is so damn fast.

If she jumps, qcfx2+A/C is really good. It's invulnerable in the startup and as an anti air often gives you a wall-bounce combo.

Mai's air game is really annoying, I know this matchup all too well, but I actually find it in Shen's favor. If you can get past those annoying st.B, st.D pokes then you shouldn't have too much trouble. Mai lacks anti airs completely, so you can hop D pressure her pretty well.

Essentially to win the match you have to go into it with lots of meter.

If you ever see Clark doing hcf+B, try to get an EX grab out. It'll win. I also have trouble with this matchup though. Grapplers in general are a really tough situation for Shen. I guess it's because he needs to get into their throw range to start any of his damage, and that's not a place that most people want to be.

Chin anywhere 1 drive 1 stock:

j.C, s.C, Far C, Ex hcf K, hcf B, df B, qcb A, [DC] hcf D, df B x3~B, s.C - 571

EDIT: Looking at the damages again, I think for an anywhere 1 drive 1 stock combo, Chin takes the lead.

Oh yeah sorry, I should have gotten that. Yeah the aerial B SRK and qcb+B give advantage on block if timed late. I'm not sure if a close C after dp+B will keep people in blockstun the entire time, but certainly after j.qcb+B it will. I really don't use air dp+B very much, but I feel like I should since it's so damn good. I almost always jump in with j.D or j.CD.
