1. How long have you played KOF? Which KOF was your first? Which is your favorite?

I’ve been playing KoF for about 3 years now. I’m relatively new to the fighting game scene, an’09er as it would be. And because of that, I unfortunately missed out on a lot of the previous KoF games. KoF XIII was my first experience with the series, and so far it is my favorite with ’98 coming in a close second.

2. Why KOF over all of the other fighters?

Custom colors, ‘nuff said. Haha just kidding, although there’s something great about giving the entire cast Jojos skins. When I first found the local scene where I went to university, I was there for Street Fighter and Mahvel, but there was one setup of KoF XIII where a few guys were grinding it out. I loved the sprite work and animation, but the combo system and especially the movement sold the game for me. The neutral game of KoF XIII at a high level is fantastic to watch; it’s like a dangerous dance between the fighters, as described by one of those guys.

3. Are you a tournament player? If so, list your tournament rankings.

I’d like to compete in tournaments, but unfortunately I haven’t had the resources to travel far from the Midwest because of being a poor college student. I was at UFGT X this past summer and went 2-2. And hopefully, now that I’m out of school and trying to settle into a stable job, I’d be able to attend a lot more majors.

1. How long have you played KOF? Which KOF was your first? Which is your favorite?

I’ve played KOF since the first edition came out. A good friend of mine introduced it to me after playing The Art of Fighting in a local arcade back in Juarez Mexico. That was in 1994. My favorite KOF edition is 2000 because of the gameplay and the good selection of characters and strikers even though many will disagree but thats my personal opinion.

2. Why KOF over all of the other fighters?

Back in Juarez MEX playing KOF is more of a tradition for young kids and there is more selection of KOF than any other games. Although my main reason for playing is because of the style of animation. Characters in specific have more style in moves and the gameplay pace is fast and combos look awesome with flashy desperation moves.

3. Are you a tournament player? If so, list your tournament rankings.

I became interested in the tournament side of the game because of the friends i met here in Colorado. I always played KOF but it was more of a past time for me since playing KOF happened when going on a trip to the corner store. When i participated on the last three majors I did not get out of pools.

4. Do you have a local scene or do you rely on online play?

Yes we have a very solid local scene here in Colorado we are known as KCO (Kings of Co) its a small scene but we hardly miss any of the two days we meet during the week. I also play online whenever i get a chance.

1. How long have you played KOF? Which KOF was your first? Which is your favorite?

The first KOF I ever touched was KOF98, which is my favorite. However, I never really got too hands on with KOF while growing up. I had more exposure to Fatal Fury than I did KOF.

I didn’t start getting into KOF proper until I started playing fighting games seriously again 4 years ago, where the local scene was screwing around with KOF2K2UM and RBFF2. When I learned about KOF13 from IPW streaming the old Southtown Arcade weeklies, I ended up watching a lot of it. Announcement of a console release guaranteed that I would be playing it.

2. Why KOF over all of the other fighters?

What always stood out to me was the pace of the game. It’s very offensive in nature with the ways pressure can be applied, but at the same time that pressure is not completely absolute and one-sided. Mobility is another strong point that works hand in hand with the offensiveness of the game. The ability to pick three characters is also a plus when I consider that KOF is one of the few series that makes me want to touch on all of the cast at some point.

I think the biggest draw at the end though is the community. Before, during, and after a tournament, you will meet a lot of people who just want to sit down and play the game. They’ll talk with you, play with you, impart knowledge if you ask, and all of it is without any sort of strings attached.

3. Are you a tournament player? If so, list your tournament rankings.

Unfortunately, due to recent forays into stream production work and commentary, playing in tournaments has taken a backseat. That being said, my record wasn’t stellar, but I wasn’t going 0-2 either.

4. Do you have a local scene or do you rely on online play?

While a local scene in Milwaukee exists, it is very fickle when it comes to staying stable in a game that is not Street Fighter 4. This means having to travel to Chicago if I want to get some practice against players for KOF13. Although for some strange reason, people are starting to pick up KOF2K2UM again. No complaints here.

I prefer to play offline more than online because I really like to dive into the nuances of some matchups, and I feel as though online does not currently allow for that.

1. How long have you played KOF? Which KOF was your first? Which is your favorite?

I’ve played KOF for 20 years. :p It’s evident which was my first. My favorite was ’96 since I played it just for fun, and fun it was!

2. Why KOF over all of the other fighters?

I started with other fighters, Karate Champ, Samurai Shodown, Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Street Smart, Pit Fighter, MK, SF just to name a few, but when KOF came out, it blew everything else away! The mood, the system, the music, the style everything was so fresh and cutting edge. Dat intro! I felt as if the game picked me, not the other way around. The scene was huge, just about every convenience store, gas station, shopping center, and arcade had KOF in it, it was impossible not to play KOF.

3. Are you a tournament player? If so, list your tournament rankings.

A constant top 3 in local tourneys, top 8 in Texas Showdown(2014), Top 8 in CEO(2014).

4. Do you have a local scene or do you rely on online play?

We do have a small, but strong local scene. I play online only to fill in on match-ups we don’t have locally.

5. Do you prefer pad or stick? Why is that your preference?

Stick, I’ve played stick since childhood. I’ve played pad in older games, but to me, it never compared.

6. What advice do you have for new players?

Play for fun first, always! The tournament scene will call you eventually, you’ll know when. Took me 17 years to even consider it.

7. How do you choose a character and team? How do you choose the order?

Aesthetics, feel, style everything has to be there; I have to like the character, regardless of tier or type.

8. Which type of character do you prefer?

I played Leona in ’96, I used to avoid charge characters at all costs before that. But when it comes down to it, rush down are my faves.

9. From a purely gameplay perspective, who is you favorite character?

Mature

10. How often do you practice or train in KOF alone?

I get bored really fast in practice mode, about 10/hrs a week at most before tournaments, too much time IMO. And this is why I lose! ;P

11. How do you gain new techniques, strategies, setups and combos? Do you watch match videos?

Match vids bore me to death(that’s why I’m free), I usually watch tech vids by Gutts CL, Mienai Kage(Leona!) and a little Juicebox on the side!

12. What would you like to see in a new KOF game?

A mixture of KOF 11/13 Game mechanics, KoF XIII sprites, more characters, KOF XII Art and backgrounds(minus the zoom), KOF ’96 style music. New Arc; Gaea!(Mother of Orochi?)

1. How long have you played KOF? Which KOF was your first? Which is your favorite?
I’ve only recently started playing KoF competitively with KoF XIII, before then i stuck mainly to kof 98 and 02. I’d have to say i definitely enjoy XIII the most so far.

2. Why KOF over all of the other fighters?
I made KoF my main game after XIII got released, i honestly don’t know why i wanted to play it so heavily. I just really enjoyed the art style and fast paceness of the game. i really wanted to get into 12 but we all know how that went. I think what i like most about XIII was the overall fairness of play as opposed to the capcom fighters i was accustomed to.

3. Are you a tournament player? If so, list your tournament rankings.
I am a tournament player. I got 9th at Final Round in 2012, 13th at Ufgt in 2013, top 32 at ufgt 2014, and probably last at EvO lol. The decline is disheartening haha.

1. How long have you played KOF? Which KOF was your first? Which is your favorite?
I’ve been playing KoF since late 2012, and XIII is my first game. I really enjoy XIII and I think it is my favorite of the ones I have played, but this is largely a result of it being the only one that people play offline around where I am (aside from two folks who occasionally play 2002 Ultimate Match). I also enjoy watching high-level matches of 98, 2000, and XI where they can be found.

2. Why KOF over all of the other fighters?
Complicated answer. Contrary to popular opinion, I would actually call KoFXIII very beginner friendly because conceptually the game is very simple. Pretty much every character is “get up in that ass” and there are very, very minor variations on that from character to character. There are “matchups” in the sense that you have to approach grapplers, raw rushdown characters and characters with good approaches differently, but I would say that these matchup differences are much more subtle than in games such as Street Fighter IV where it can feel like the entire design ideology of the game changes depending on what characters are on screen. (C. Viper and Guile have no business being in the same fighting game.) As well, getting out of the corner is shockingly easy in KoF in general, which makes it a fair bit forgiving to newer players who lose in the neutral easily (which is not to say that they don’t get put back in the corner just as quickly)

The character balance, as a result of this, is pretty immaculate, and the tier list feels largely marginal as a result. (The top tier characters do, on average, really just do more damage easier than other characters) The mantra of players mattering a lot more than characters seems to really hold true in this game, and though certain characters go through phases of popularity (Evo 2013 was the age of Kim, Evo 2014 was the age of EX Iori) it doesn’t seem like the top competitive players are resting too much on the same characters. The combo system is a lot of fun because it involves linking specials together more than normals, and that means that characters move in a lot of different ways to do damage. Combos are a nice medium difficulty as well, making it just enough work to learn really hard combos that that still feels rewarding. Combos also reward the amount of work with massive damage, and I’ll admit I prefer games that emphasize big damage on smart conversions over games that allow players to achieve victory by a thousand papercuts (intense knockdown oki, endless corner pressure and such)

On top of that, I really like the art, which is largely unhindered by 3D objects (the 3D effects in other fighters make them difficult for me to look at, especially as a colorblind person), and wisely chooses bright colors and fairly low contrast. The game doesn’t service the art design, the art design services the game. The soundtrack is also quite good, though I usually play at fairly low volume so I can discuss matchups or I wear headphones to play music from my phone.

3. Are you a tournament player? If so, list your tournament rankings.
Due to my income I don’t make it out to tournaments much, and local tournaments for the game are extremely rare. The one time we did have a KoF tournament at the Xanadu monthly, I went 2-2 by beating two players who had been playing the game for less than a week, then losing to two players who had thoroughly wrecked my shit the night before.
