Guard Cancel: MrKOF

Guard Cancel is an interview series profiling KOF community members. The goal is to get to know the people behind the tags. Guard Cancel will be published every Monday. If you’d like to be featured, email admin@dreamcancel.com

1. How long have you played KOF? Which KOF was your first? Which is your favorite?
I’ve been playing the game ever since 94 came out. KoF 95 was my favorite animation wise. Gameplay wise would be 97-98.

2. Why KOF over all of the other fighters?
It was the only game I liked that didn’t feel slow and offered more options regarding jump ins and making use of general normals. I appreciated the escape options that KOF offers where you’re less likely to get cheesed/chipped. In my KOF terms “calculation” = no escape!

3. Are you a tournament player? If so, list your tournament rankings.
Yeah, I’m a tournament player and I’ve placed pretty well in all KOF tournaments.
Let’s just say it’s hard for me not to make TOP 3 LOL. * * C.M.D. Duc (AsH) has the Tips N Tricks Magazine I was once featured in =P. Playing KOF ten years ago was cutthroat.

4. Do you have a local scene or do you rely on online play?
We used to have a local scene before the shut down of A.I. But you can still find many underground spots like boba shops with great KOF talent hidden. I’ve played online only once…and it was for KOF 12… My advice to everyone is to play online if you have no one play with on your level. Playing live people at tournaments is bound to happen sooner or later.

5. Do you prefer pad or stick? Why is that your preference?
Even having started on a pad I prefer using a joystick because I had to learn to play on joystick only because all the players I had access to were at my local gaming areas. Also, I don’t get blisters anymore compared to when I was using a pad before.

6. What advice do you have for new players?
Have fun first and respect your losses. Don’t ever give up! If you have troubles, ask a friend to help you with execution/gameplay. Just don’t forget to voice out because in KOF you will have many friends who once were beginners.

7. How do you choose a character and team? How do you choose the order?
I usually hand pick my character based on how I want to win my matches. I always match my team’s color coordination. If the color is thrown off I wouldn’t pic the character LOL. Order to me doesn’t really matter when it comes to casuals….tournaments yeah I do give it thought when it comes to meter management.

8. Which type of character do you prefer?
I prefer to play a character that requires heart and looks great while winning as well. But as long as the character is very mobile I’ll play with them.

9. From a purely gameplay perspective, who is you favorite character?
Terry Bogard is still the Legend! He’s got the tools to fight off every character..but winning with him is walking that fine line between Victory and Failure.

10. How often do you practice or train in KOF alone?
I spend about a good 6 hours a day at the arcade whereas at A.I. I spent 10+. Sometimes before I sleep I think about all the HD combos I’ll be performing the next day lol.

11. How do you gain new techniques, strategies, setups and combos? Do you watch match videos?
I’d say whatever that gives me a problem such as forced block strings I’d relay that in my mind to help me to think of possible ways to get out or even prevent it from happening. There’s not really too much setups because I play on auto-pilot.I’d only watch match videos if supposedly a player has did something really cool in a match and yet to be seen.

12. Have you played KOFXIII yet? Did you like? Will you buy it?
It’s KOF13! Of course I love it…I literally dropped 2k2um just to brush up my skills for KOF 13.I would definitely buy it! Hell, I’d buy it for all my friends if I had the cash.

13. Will you continue to play older KOF games while playing KOFXIII?
As for older titles I would play 2k2um,98um, 98, and 97 in that order. I can’t forget the roots. But it’s really hard to go back due to being accustomed to KOF 13’s animation and new engine. Playing the older titles may seem fun for a bit (to me) but I’ve grown up because KOF 13 is in my Future!

  • Mr. KOF makes me wanna play KOF13. I gave up on 12, but I’ll try very hard to play and practice 13. No one I know plays KOF, but I’m sure it will turn a few heads. And I’ve always got online, so I’m in there.
