Guard Cancel: KC’s NOTOR1OUS | Missouri

Guard Cancel is an interview series profiling KOF community members and players. The goal is to get to know the people behind the tags. Guard Cancel will be published every Monday. If you’d like to be featured, email or PM me in the forum.

1. How long have you played KOF? Which KOF was your first? Which is your favorite?
I’ve only recently started playing KoF competitively with KoF XIII, before then i stuck mainly to kof 98 and 02. I’d have to say i definitely enjoy XIII the most so far.

2. Why KOF over all of the other fighters?
I made KoF my main game after XIII got released, i honestly don’t know why i wanted to play it so heavily. I just really enjoyed the art style and fast paceness of the game. i really wanted to get into 12 but we all know how that went. I think what i like most about XIII was the overall fairness of play as opposed to the capcom fighters i was accustomed to.

3. Are you a tournament player? If so, list your tournament rankings.
I am a tournament player. I got 9th at Final Round in 2012, 13th at Ufgt in 2013, top 32 at ufgt 2014, and probably last at EvO lol. The decline is disheartening haha.

4. Do you have a local scene or do you rely on online play?
I do have a local scene. Though not many players there’s about 4 or 5 of us that dedicate time toward it.

5. Do you prefer pad or stick? Why is that your preference?
I prefer stick just because of efficiency, i can’t imagine goin back to playing any other fighting game on pad.

6. What advice do you have for new players?
My advice for new players would be to learn your characters HD combos first. Sounds hard to say at first, but you’ll find out how simpler combos overall will be once you learn them.

7. How do you choose a character and team? How do you choose the order?
I choose characters originally just by who I like. I never do any research to see who’s top tier or not. I just pick a character who’s persona i think is pretty cool. Then as the game develops i may switch one or 2 characters around but keep atleast one main core component of my team. I choose the order based on who can get me personally the farthest. I know that i play Hwa on point about 90 percent of the time. Hwa without meter is not really threatening but I see that pokes are so well that he’s usually able to gain momentum/meter pretty fast.

8. Which type of character do you prefer?
I prefer a character that can do moderate-high damage without having to expend too many resources.

9. From a purely gameplay perspective, who is your favorite character?
My favorite character from a gameplay perspective is probably Flame Iori. If i had to pick franchise character it’d be yamazaki then takuma as a close second.

10. How often do you practice or train in KOF alone?
i’d say after EvO i probably have only gone to training mode about twice since then, but typically i like to get in about 3-4 hours a week total in training mode to stay fresh.

11. How do you gain new techniques, strategies, setups and combos? Do you watch match videos?
I gain mainly new setups by playing a variety of people at majors. Whether that be me money matching or just casuals. I find i retain a lot more information from playing people then just watching videos. However, I do watch all the videos posted in the Facebook group as well.

12. What would you like to see in a new KOF game?
I’d really like to see the current cast updated with more characters. I’d kill to have Yamazaki playable again. I’d also like a better netcode with possibility for online training.
