@Kof peeps: If you guys are cool with it, there's space on Sundays to run the ranbats. It might be possible to get the stream on iPlayWinner just like AE and MvC3. If you're not okay with Sunday, please let me know otherwise I will change it to Sunday. As it stands, it's still going to be Friday the 8th.

Results are posted for the Top 8 of July 10th! Please check the second post. There are 5 more rounds till the end of the season!

Ranking battles are done by points. Top 8 participants get points ranging from 10 to 1. The people with the most points at the end of the season (which is 6 weeks biweekly), are ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd respectively. Just a note, we were an hour late, but had consistent stream of matches so delays weren't that bad! I figure it would be nightmarish with more though!

In any case, congrats to all participants!

"Top 8 participants get points ranging from 10 to 1"

How do you decide how much points?

Post by: Reiki.Kito on July 11, 2011, 04:42:00 PM
1st gets 10
2nd gets 7
3rd gets 5
4th gets 3
5th and 6th get 2
7th and 8th get 1

You can do it any way you want. In other tournaments I run, I usually give them even numbers so the math comes out simple. However, Southtown prefers odd numbers so it's okay.

Didn't notice until now, but, you should put the timer at 60 seconds per match, not 99....

After testing it recently, I can see your point and I'll bring it up to Southtown to see if that can be changed for the tournament.

Do we get punished if we put it in training mode. I'm just asking is it cool if I put it in training mode but pick the same team? I autopilot and set it to training mode 90% of the time.

It takes more effort to put INTO training mode than out of it. It's just a common courtesy for me because I have to run it and if someone complains that you switched characters or something; I have to mediate it. It makes it that much easier for problems to start. So if you could please do that, it'd make things run smoothly and give no one a reason to complain.

If something goes wrong, I'd rather it be something I can control like a 3 vs. 5 goof up than having to reset the game because someone accused you of cheating.

Yeah I'll try to remember to not put it in training mode. Like I said though I do it automatically.

* Matches from Top 8 forward are Two out of Three Rounds, Two out of Three Games for a Match set.

Also can you explain this bit? I'm not sure what it's saying.

I mean you established that a match is two out of three rounds. What's the second mean?

It's probably C&P from another tournament template. Rounds in KOF are a lot different than in other fighting games since it's not 1v1, rather 3v3. Instead of the usual 3 round max, a KOF match could be anywhere from 3 rounds (straight/OCV) to 5 rounds (both players on 3rd character).

Personally, I wouldn't say "Match set" either. Keep it simple. There are rounds in a match and matches in a set. I wouldn't bother mentioning rounds since it's dependent on gameplay (meaning you can't adjust this as an option anyway).

I would stick with "Double Elimination. Best of 3 matches (Grand Finals - best of 5 matches)."

I kind of assumed he meant round as in one whole 3v3. but yeah c/p from another tournament definitely doesn't work.

I used the template from the MvC3 one that Southtown made and made edits. Most of the rules made sense, but I probably missed this one. I'll be sure to strike it, but you can just note it means nothing really in KoF.

Also, I tend to put it in training mode as well, but if we're going to do this legit, the easiest way is to just make a warning about it. Last time, I allowed winners to reselect if they wanted (Which meant training mode wasn't that big a deal). Again, I know how you feel, but I will make an announcement about it on the day of. I will also be at the machine all day taking notes like I did last time. If you have any other questions; I'm always available.

I'm glad you liked it! We're trying to increase the speed of the tournament, but foul-ups happen and it generally can last a while. I feel we did really good and it allowed people to play in tournaments like AE and Marvel while still playing KoF.

@Tsubasa: That's how they set up their other tournaments and I tried to copy their system the best way I can. I don't understand why you say there should be a tie in points for 5th and 7th. It might be how the question is phrased or I might not understand what you're trying to get at. However, if you don't mind explaining, I can get the jist. I really do appreciate all the helpful advice and feedback!

@Nilcam: We're practicing every chance we get. I try to find time to practice, but event day I'm always choking up! I'm glad you did enjoy the stream though.

@THE ANSWER: Thank you very much! I look forward to meeting you and hopefully seeing you participate!

Here James I'll fix the results and try to explain why it should be that way. I'll fix my name too -.-''

1. Geo.YUC (Kula, Terry, Robert): 10
2. Isaiah (Shen, Vice, Maxima or Ralf, Shen, Maxima): 7
3. CharREX (Iori, Clark, Kyo): 5
4. Renzo (Andy, Raiden, K' or Andy, Shen, K'): 3
5. Paul (Andy, Elisabeth, K'): 2
5. Fatacon (Leona, Duolon, King or Vice, Duolon, King): 2
7. Hotpockets (Joe, Kim, Terry): 1
7. D' (Iori, K', Athena or Kyo, K', Athena): 1

July 24th Ranking Battles:
1. CMD.DUC (Ash) (Predominant Teams: K', Ash, Shen or Iori, Ash, Shen): 10
2. Kane317 (Duolon, Shen, Chin): 7
3. Renzo (Andy, Raiden, K' or Andy, Shen, K'): 5
4. Demoninja (Andy, Kula, Raiden): 3
5. 4leaf (Mature, Leona, Athena or Shen, Leona, Mature): 2
5. Fixel (Ralf, Shen, Ryo): 2
7. Fatacon (Duolon, Leona, King): 1
7. Hotpockets (Joe, Kim, Terry or Ryo, Joe, Terry): 1

Current Standings:
1. Geo.YUC = 10
1. CMD.DUC = 10
3. Renzo = 8
4. Kane317 = 7
4. Isaiah = 7
6. CharRex = 5
7. Demoninja = 3
7. Fatacon = 3
9. Hotpockets = 2
9. Paul = 2
9. 4leaf = 2
12. D' = 1
12. Fixel = 1

The reason why you have tied for 5th and 7th is that the two players who are supposed to be 5th/6th have the same number of wins and losses so they're both 5th place. Same with 7th. I changed the point standing to reflect the same concept. It makes no sense to say someone is 1st and another is 2nd when they have the same amount of points.

I guess Demoninja covered it.  To give a simple example, imagine a 4-person single elim bracket.  Mind you, this would never happen cause with 4 people, you'd probably want to round robin, but this is for the sake of an example.  In the first round of eliminations, one guy is eliminated from the top of the bracket and one guy is from the bottom half.  There is no way to determine who gets 3rd and who gets 4th, so you say that they tie for 3rd.  This kind of thing always happens in single/double elim brackets.  There are placings that are always ties: 5th, 7th, 9th, 13th, 17th, 25th, 33rd, etc.  The only time you can determine a clear 1-8 is when you have people play sets to determine ties.  This generally only happens in round robins.

The numerical rankings are based on win/lose ratios. How you did in the tournament determines your ranking in the event of a tie. For example, 4leaf had a better record than Fixel so he got 5th instead of 6th. That's why I took notes the entire tournament. I can tell you when you lost and to what character. When the rankings come up, I make comparisons in records to see who actually came in. Although it's completely asthetic, I don't entirely understand the harm in how I have it set up and how it differs from the other ranking battles being run at Southtown.

Do you all feel comfortable that way?

@Demoninja: Phonetically, the way you say your tag makes it into two words, which made me write it the way I believe it was spelled. I'm sorry. However, do you pronounce it DEMO - NINJA or DEMON-INJA or DEMON-NINJA? Just to be sure.

This I'm having trouble understanding is important. Why can't you say someone is tied for first or second? Why do you have to skip numbers? That just makes it very confusing.

The way you're doing it is needlessly difficult and a lot of extra work for yourself. No other tournament does that either. Overall 4leaf and Fixel both won however many and they both lost twice therefore they should be ranked the same.

Dude I have no idea rofl. I'm heard the first two very often and the 3rd one quite a bit as well. However people usually don't call me the 3rd one when they see I have one N in my name.

The way I put it I have them tied for first since they have the same amount of points. Because there are two people tied for first that means there's no 2nd place so I skipped 2nd. One way you can do it is just put however many points people have and arrange it by that. It would bypass all the confusing ways people like to list standings.

I'll probably do that. The reason I numbered it was just so that I didn't have a long list of similar variables, the points. I know overall they did about the same, but 4leaf managed to get to the last character while Fixel did not get to the last character. I've recorded that so I can see, without a shadow of a doubt, that 4leaf was 5th and Fixel was 6th. I feel that if I have the ability to do it and I can prove the standing for the tournament, it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

EDIT: All results have been posted for today's ranbat and points have been distributed.

This maybe a little late, but those who rather watch YouTube versions than streams (especially since you can't use eLive.Pro with twitch.tv), the Ranbats where the SoCal guys went up are finally uploaded to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/iplaywinner).

I know it's really late to mention this but rally mode is essentially tourney mode, one player presses start and both sides are auto started with infinite time to choose teams. After that just continue before the win quote screen goes away and the winner is stuck with their team or let it skip through to get a game over screen and then start the next set of people. Now no more test buttoning every time you want to get the next two players on. Other than that good stuff, I'm looking forward to seeing how much you guys improve. Gotta take down So-Cal next time (I say this as a player in So-Cal).

The arcade does not seem to want to do that. I have suggested it, but they feel the way we're doing it now is the best way. I don't mind resetting the machine as I'm in front of it most of the time.

Wait, so I lost all my points? Did Haunts put you up to this?! Ouch, James.

Sorry, I was redoing the format because of some suggestions other people had made. Normally, I'd have just added names but I had to redo the entire current standings so I might have deleted you by mistake. I'll add you in this very minute.

hey James, while you are at it, I think I should have 5 points instead of 4. unless i'm missing something with the format here.
