Title: MMORPGS - "The Fun(Grind) Never Stops"
Post by: jinxhand on August 02, 2011, 08:54:23 PM
So, I know everyone here has either heard of, played, or is still playing at least 1 (or more) MMORPG(s). Too many types to mention, from browser-based, to PC/Consoles, or even on the DS.

Anyway, tell us what MMORPG are you playing, or have played, and what you thought about it. If you're still playing, perhaps others that still play can meet up here or whatever... It doesn't have to literally be Massively Multiplayer, so games like Two Worlds, and hand held MMOs (Phantasy Star Zero or Phantasy Star Portable) are ok, too...

I'm currently playing FFXI on Sylph server. I've been going back and forth on jobs, so the highest I've got is 72DNC. I like PUP, so I took that to about 58ish. COR is fun, too.

I also play GuildWars, and am definitely waiting for GW2 to drop. Right now I've been pvping with my D/R, and that's been working out. Got a R/W also.

Lastly, I do play PS0 (Phantasy Star Zero) on my DSi. I've been rolling RaCast since the very first PSO and I'm still rolling it on this one. I can't remember my friend code, but I'll post it up if anyone still plays this.

Anyone here play DCUO??? I played the beta, and while it was fun, I'm still skeptical as to whether or not to get it. I do like that its on the console though, and that SOE actively updates/patches the game...

I played Anarchy Online when I was younger. Don't like MMORPG's that much. They are so boring and repetitive.

SE beefed up FFXI like crazy with Abyssea... There's soon to be new job abilities.. Speaking of jobs, did you play when they released Dancer and Scholar???

We definitely gotta hit up GW, since you can now have a full party of heroes, and they've released a new area where you can finish up any mission you need to to prepare for GW2, since the more you do now, the more items you get in GW2.

Have you seen PSO2 yet??? Looks pretty dope so far... Let's hope Sega doesn't screw this up though...

Hmm MMO's, I have an account on Ragnarok Online but I haven't been playing it lately. I am also extremely hyped for Phantasy Star Online 2, Sega please bring it to America.

Does Monster Hunter Tri count? because I played that a good bit too.

I played Ragnarok Online for a long time, but I quit years ago. I played Sniper, Whitesmith, Sta Gladiator/Taekwon Master and Gunslinger.

Right now all I play is Dungeon Fighter Online, and I think it's one of the best designed online games ever. I play a Monk, it's great.

Yeah I've been reading on massively that they're working on doing mega servers. The thing that's dumb though is that the PC players are still segregated from the PS3 players. With that said I also thought that they all played together on whatever server they were on. Wassup with that???

Oh yeah, Monster Hunter Tri counts... I mentioned PSZ, and that's only 4 player online and on local wifi.

I personally can't wait to try out that Engineer class. I most times play range characters, then went over to tanking/hybrid characters, but I've always had a niche for characters who can cause mayhem without any magic. I play Mechanic on DFO also, and I just like how I still can play "ranger" and still have things running around and assisting me.

And speaking of Ranger, I'm so glad in PSO2 you can manually aim. Playing RaCast will never be the same. I hope they show off new features.

Wow, that's an odd coincidence.  Last winter I really got back into FFXI for the first time in years, finally (thanks to a certain place that starts with the letter A) got my char the last 40 levels or so to 90.  PUP through and through, subbing WAR and DNC :)

However, once I was at 90 it seemed like I was going to be grinding for months for the endgame gear, using the same knuckles as 99% of the other PUPs and MNKs, and wearing the same certain pink armor as just about 90% of the people you see at lvl 90 (you know the kind I'm talking about... the absurdedly cheap armor and weapons you get there that you get to use forever till you get the final stuff which actually makes you look somewhat different from the pack).

Note that this was based off of up till maybe April... no clue what's happened since then or if they've raised the level cap.  If my internet back at school sucks for KOF XIII I might get back into it.

Also I used to play some GW a while back too, played the odd combination of W/R, in PvE mode (this weird beastmaster build that somehow worked).  Never did much PvP ironically, but finished prophecies, factions, eotn and nearly nightfall.  Got far enough to have unlocked a good bit of stuff for GW2, which I'm really looking forward to (need to go back and get more trophies, need 1 more of a new kind to unlock that flame sword for GW2).

Realistically speaking GW2's probably the closest thing to an MMO I should go into at this point, never have time and always have a crappy connection.

Yeah there's so much that got beefed in FFXI. Campaign is definitely one of them. I fought like 3 things, died twice, and reported in and got 8100 exp, then went back in the same campaign battle, and ended that with about 6000 exp doing slightly less. Drops do get better also with campaign. I'm not stuck getting ladybug wings, and slug eyes.

As far as GW goes, there's still some things I need to finish. PvP is too much fun though, especially with D/R and Derv got a ton of buffs recently. I need a new guild I will say that. The one I'm in doesn't do much, and people just simply leave.

Can you still level a new job in a couple of days in aby?  Kind of pissed me off, I'd gone halfway through the levels the old-fashioned way (actually I think I'd hit lvl 60, now that I think of it), then got sucked into aby and was suddenly at 90.  Then had no clue what the hell I wanted to actually do then.

That and even with the changes the game being a huge time sink around finals led to me dropping out of it.  Still have left it installed this time though, just need to resub and update and bam I'm back in FFXI :)  Though I think I need to level up in KOF XIII and MBAA first, I've got a good amount of time to get grinding combos now :)

You guys are making me want to play XI again. I hear upgrading relic weapons are useless now in XI. Are there any signs of XI coming to a close? XIV is feeling kinda dead last I touched it a couple of months back.

Surprisingly, FFXI is doing way better than FFXIV and they've outlined the next set of updates for the future. More mobs, maps, level caps, etc. I'll post the info when I get the info again... It's gonna be a long time before FFXI gets shut down.

It does suck for some servers though, since alot of heads go into Aby, and straight up hit 90, and there's not too many lower level players. Luckily for Sylph, there's still a good balance of low and high level players.

Well since I have prematurely bought about 6mo worth of XIV gameplay, I'll stick with it until it runs out and hope it keeps my interest.

Xxenace: greek/norse mytholigy, names of past generals/rulers, favorite video game characters (i tend to avoid jp names though) and good old fashion random name generator lol.

It's most definitely not gonna come out for a long time on ps3, especially since the game hasn't done well, but even more disheartening is that SE has had problems developing the game on the ps3's engine/infrastructure. It's way harder to make games on the ps3 than on the x360 (thank God for directx!!!), whereas back in ps2/xbox1 days it was harder to build games on the xbox, but the emotion engine on the ps2 was way easier to work with, that's why arcade ports were stupid easy to create, damn near cut and paste.

FFXIV was to be released for x360, but M$ wanted the game to be integrated in the xbl system and their security methods. SE didn't want the hassle of having to go through one program to get to another program a la PlayOnline viewer to FFXI, so they just wanted a straight-to-game approach. M$ didn't like that, so there was some beef, and then SE basically said "screw you" and decided to stick with ps3. There was still a possibility, but that all got shot down when the reviews came in.

What kills me is that FFXI has a good formula to it, and people thought that SE would just make changees to it to make it better and release a better, faster version of FFXI, which is aight to me since I'd prefer to play a game that can go 60fps rather than 30fps, and is limited thanks to the ps2's limitations. There's so much that XIV could've been, and just isn't.

Oh as far as character names go, I stick with Jinxhand the whole way. It's practically original, and I like consistency. What's strange is on FFXI I get a gangload of party invites from Jp players. Iunno why though...

It was bound to happen though... I mean think about it: the game is not cross platform, so there's no pc/ps3 action going on like in FFXI. PSN getting hacked didn't help the game out either. On top of that, when you compare this to the other Super Hero MMORPGs, Champions Online beats this out and even City of Heroes does leaps and bounds due to the many options available.

The game is still new, so I do see tons of room for it to grow. I played the beta, and I liked it alot. I just think that DCUO could've done better in terms of giving the players something more in terms of powers and other options. I do like how you can have a separate look while keeping different gear on. The Hero vs Villain pvp is ok, but honestly having 6 Batmen vs 6 Jokers can get monotonous imo... It's not like you can change what type of Batman you wanna be or change your skill set.

Lets see the first MMO I've played was Diablo 2 but that was way back in the early days of the game. The next game I actually touched was Cabal which can get boring from all the grinding, unless you have a good guild who runs dungeons all day. I played that for about 2 years on and off. After that I tried DFO on and off as well but didn't get too far into it. I kinda feel like playing it again though but not sure. I also played a good amount of Battle of Immortals. I love the event systems they have in the game. Though gettin all the good gear you nead is hard to get unless you are lucky or grind dungeons like mad. Then I tried Dragon Nest. Game is really fun. I also love the control setup it uses. I'm looking forward to Diablo 3. Also speaking of Diablo have you guys seen this game:

Path of Exile - The Witch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3vHUc8cmy4#ws)

The Templar - Path of Exile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZycHZmvy2n0#ws)

I think this game looks amazing for a F2P game. It's in closed beta atm but hopefully they announce a open beta date soon.

Edit: Also forgot to mention I'm playing a but of Rusty Hearts atm. So far it's not too bad.

I've been checking out Eden Eternal recently, and I think its a pretty good game. Here's the link:

http://edeneternal.aeriagames.com/ (http://edeneternal.aeriagames.com/)

Their Job system is pretty dope. You basically start off with one class, and you can switch to other classes on the fly, to suit your needs--- there is a recharge time though. You can unlock other jobs also while playing. Aside from the anime appeal, this game does seem pretty hardcore. There's currently only 3 races available, but the other 9 will be released at a decent pace.

I'm still tackling missions in Guild Wars so I can get those special items for Guild Wars 2. If any of you guys need help with that, send me a msg. I also do a bit of pvp...

GW is f2p, but it's one of those games you have to buy first then its free for life... There was a huge sale of the game on steam, and the game is still pretty cheap I believe...

If you're not sure just buy one of the games, then if you like it, just buy the rest. My suggestion though is to get Nightfall first, since it gives you access to heroes which are fully customizable and way better NPCs you can party with if you decide to NPC solo. Prophecies is good, but you're limited to henchmen, which are like heroes, but weaker.

You might be able to get it from the NCSoft Launcher from the site, too...

FFXIV looks dope, and I'm glad its finally gonna be coming to ps3, but they've still got lots of work to do... I don't see that sub plan working out too well imo... I'm pretty sure a bunch of cats are gonna jump ship...

I wish they just stuck with a way to beef up FFXI for new players and make it playable on those thin ps3s... Abyssea's great and all, but it has been taking away from every other aspect of the game... People barely know about pvping in that game...

can't wait for ver 2.0 even though it's a year away. no more seamless world which i don't mind since it will get rid of the repetitive terrain. i like the addition of female roegadyn, highlander and male miqote. time for me to catch up from the 6 months or so i lost playing kof xiii.

loved this game in middle school

So did a lot of people.  Funny enough, everyone stopped playing after they left middle school.  Doubt it's a coincidence.

Idk, I like RPG's, but I never was one for the MMORPG, though of course my desktop sucks and my laptop isn't exactly top of the line.  Also, never really got the allure.  The Old Republic seems neat though.

from what ive heard from people who played in the beta the only reason the would stay for the story and with out it it more or less would be WoW with lightsabers

Well if I didn't care for the story, I'd be playing other MMO's wouldn't you say?

Well I'm not gonna pay anything for it as, yet again, I don't really play MMO's.  Just said the Old Republic looks neat.  Nothing more, nothing less.

You iphone heads ever check out Order and Chaos???

Sure, it's a WoW rip-off, but damn it they did it so well!!! I feel like although it's a clone, it's somehow better... Runes of Magic is pretty dope, too, with the sub-job aspect and all (coming from both Guild Wars and FFXI)... Couldn't get with Allods because of the no auto attack feature, and there's one more I can't think of the name, but it was mad lame...

2. quitting ff14 after SE started making everyone pay for it it just got ghost maybe ill give it another try when 2.0 comes out later this year

3. TERA is having sign ups for a upcoming beta now so if you have a good enough pc go sign up for it

I'm still more than likely willing to check out FFXIV once it drops on consoles...

But if this happens, then I won't even care about FFXIV:

Either way, I'm getting GW2 for the PC, but it would be nice to have a console playable version as well... I'm not biased... I do think it will be a ps3 thing though, but who knows for sure...

I'm trying to get into a new MMO. GW2 looks pretty good but I've never paid for a MMO game. Tera also looks really nice as well but that's p2p also. I'm looking for something f2p but isn't pay to win.

you silly person guild wars 1 and 2 are b2p (buy to play) just buy it and you own it for life of course you still have to buy the expansions

also aion is going f2p in the US soon and it should already be f2p in europe

Yea I know you have to buy it. I just don't like spending real money on MMOs. I've played Aion in private servers before. In private servers it wasn't a complete game and still isn't from what I've read. I hear more bad than good about the game though in general. I might try it when it goes f2p. If GW2 turns out good I'll give it a try though. Hopefully my PC can handle it.

tbh dude the 50-60 bucks you spend on guild wars will be worth it even if the ends up being a buggy mess at least you know you wont have to pay a single cent for it after you pay so in that case you could just uninstall and wait for some fixes then resume when everything is better

Yeah GW is worth it... I'm damn sure getting GW2... NCSoft is actually dedicated to the fans, well at least when it comes to GW fans... Aion and Lineage fans, well--- sucks to be you guys...

Oh if you don't wanna pay, EQ1 is gonna be f2p... I liked that better than EQ2...

There's quite a few f2p titles that are gonna drop real soon... They're not beating GW though, and that's been out for a minute...

Oh yeah, you GW players better start cranking out those quests and titles if you want extra gear in GW2...

For those that want to play MHFO (Monster Hunter Frontier Online), but can't because you're either 1)Not in Japan, or 2)Don't know the methods to play the game if you're not in Japan, I present to you Hunter Blade:

Hunter Blade is Monster Hunter? - Free To Play - Gameplay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pY4hy0TiHEM#ws)

Yeah my nose fell off when I heard about it, but well it is a "suitable" alternate until Capcom fixes their act and support those MH-heads outside of Japan...

Did anyone try out Diablo 3 during the open beta weekend? I'm just glad my pc can handle the game but overall it's pretty nice. I'll probably be upgrading my pc here soon before Tera hits since it seems to require a pretty high end pc. I think it's going to be P2P though.

yeah tera is gonna be p2p though if your not willing to pay a monthly price i suggest you wait for guild wars 2 since only thing you have to do is buy the disk then thats pretty much it

Yo Noc, let's D3 together when it comes out. I plan to have a skype call session with my buddies that will be playing, and I'm gonna stream the game as well. You join us. I'm rolling a Monk.

Your best bet is to get GW2... Not fanboying or nothing, just saying--- it's pay to own, and nothing else... Plus there's better classes this time around and a higher level cap...

Tera is going to F2P and Path of Exile is open beta now for those wondering. I'm trying both of them out. I'm really liking Path of Exile. Feels more like what Diablo 3 should have been.

i thought PoE was a bit boring but i did like the FFX style leveling up system

and tera should be f2p on tuesday but if you wanna try it i suggest downloading the discovery edition before then cause 1. you get to already have a character to use and 2. for some reason the download/patching takes a ungodly amount of time and will probably be worse on tuesday. Also if you can just buy the game so you can get a few extras like more characters, etc the games is only 10 bucks on amazon
