Title: Wait... what? This game was made by SNK?
Post by: marchefelix on March 12, 2012, 09:20:56 PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystalis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystalis)

Never played this game, but I've heard from many people and on some websites that it was one of the best games for the NES. I had no idea SNK made this game, though. Makes me wonder why they didn't expand this series more so that they could have a well-known RPG series under their wing.

Yeah, I have it but have never played it. They also made Baseball Stars on the NES and a really awful port of Ikari Warriors.

SNK thought that there was more money developing arcade games than console games, sans why they only developed arcade games for the neo geo, with companies like takara doing ports from their bigger hits, IMO snk lost some potential money in the SNES era, when they tried to enter in the PSX era, it was too late

A good case of Bread for Today, Hunger for Tomorrow

Hey, Crystalis is a good game, played it back in early 90's. Although my very first SNK game would be Ikari Warriors like most people.

Heh, it wasn't focusing on arcade that's the main reason why SNK failed. It was NEO GEO WORLD!!...it's huge, unnecessary and a colossal blunder. They already had smaller Neo Geo Lands arcades, and those are doing fine...but someone came up with the idea to make a WHOLE amusement park for SNK.

All those money could invariably be invested in something else...like a new Neo Geo Console. They could still catch up during the early days of PSX and N64 and Saturn. Neo Geo CDs are already out, might as well upgrade those into fully capable 3D engines.

I doubt that the park was the problem (sans his higher prices) SNK by 1999 was still living from the MVS, a system that was incredible easy to make bootlegs, then the HNG64 was a flop, the fact that they just made fighting games, and tons of stupid things (the park was on of them, also I read from SNK producer that they hired TONS of employees)

With the AES and NGCD the message should have been clear for SNK, don't try to make your own console

Despite the folly, wish I could have gone to the park while it was still around. Would probably be crazy happy there.

My cousin went to Neo Geo World in 2000 and bought a souvenir for me...I believe it was a small carpet? Neo Geo rug...lol

But he told me that it was huge, as in HUUGE!! it got swimming pools...and bowling alley that is so big, it got its own building, the Neo Geo Bowl. There are tonnes of rides and I believed he took some photos of an SNK shop that sold everything SNK-related, you can get Kyo's gloves and his head-band, Vice's red wig (?), plus Cool Cool Toon's merchandise...which I would absolutely loved. Also there are the SNK photo machines...oh man.

It's like going to Itchy and Scratchy land...

I know an arcade with a ferris wheel, but not one witha ferris wheel that took 30 minutes to take a loop, bowling, fast food restaurants, and lots of attractions

Playing a bit of Crystalis. Good game. Albeit typical action RPG based on Zelda. But I never got into those kind of games so...

You don't see something wrong with screwing up a chance to be financially secure?

So you're assuming that, because Zelda is a successful series, SNK screwed up by not making more of them?

That's kind of silly. Firstly, there are many series similar to Zelda, and there have been even more games similar to it. Not all of them have been successful, and fewer still have survived until today. Secondly, the biggest problem SNK ever faced financially was the transition to 3D games. Just because Zelda was able to manage this transition successfully doesn't mean Crystalis would have. There are countless examples of other successful (2D) franchises that received disastrous 3D versions.

You also seem to be forgetting that, before success of the DS and Wii, Nintendo's future wasn't always so "secure." Even Capcom, with its numerous blockbuster IPs (RE, SF, Mega Man) has a gloom surrounding it these days.

It's foolish to think there are any shortcuts to financial security.

lol I can't believe you took me seriously

I may not have given any indication of it, but I was indeed joking. I know how the world works. I know there's no easy way for things.

It seems like SNK has so many hits that they never knew how to capitalize on them, Ikaris, Baseball Stars, to a lesser extent crystalis, like I said when they discovered that the future was no longer in the arcades it was a little too late

You know I'm curious anybody know what Capcom is focusing on now game wise? The list of fighters coming soon is dwindling (Darkstalkers?), Mega Man was thrown to the way side. Another Resident Evil? Just DLC?!?!?

What is Capcom focusing on right now, you ask?

Mostly DLC and rehashes, it seems to me... with the occasional sequel to an established series. And then they surprise us with a completely new game once in a blue moon.
