Title: Toronto/Southern Ontario KOF (including XIII!)
Post by: omegaryuji on June 01, 2011, 11:55:54 PM
Hey all.  For those who don't know, Lovegety has a KOF XIII machine now (ver. 1.1)!  Game felt pretty good from the little bit of time I've spent on it so far, but the button settings are kind of screwy.  SO, EVEN IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO POST IN THIS TOPIC, PAY ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING PART IF YOU'RE THINKING OF PLAYING ON THIS MACHINE:

The "L"-shape button setting (B,C,D top/ A,_,_ bottom) gives you:

 ;a ;b ;c
 ;d

The square button setting (A,C,_ top / B,D,_ bottom) gives you:

 ;b ;a ;c
(nothing on bottom)

DO NOT USE THE SQUARE BUTTON SETTING IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A  ;d BUTTON!

For those who haven't been to Lovegety before, the address is:

505 Highway 7 (between Bayview and Leslie)
Thornhill, ON L3T 7P6

The game cost 2 tokens (25 cents each) to play.  Don't pay attention to the label saying "25 x 2" on it.  Quarters don't work.

If you see some white guy playing (for now) Duo Lon, Elizabeth, Shen Woo in purple colors, that's probably me *laughs* .  Hope to see some people there!  :)

@t3h mAsTarOth...!: For this sunday, is there any chance you can get to the Shepard/Dufferin TTC station instead of Finch?  Or Rutherford GO station?  I'm not 100% clear on if I can go yet (should know by friday), but if I can, those would be much easier for me to get you from.  I could do Finch otherwise, but it's just a little more out of the way.

ya i'll be there for sure... i'm trying to get 1 of my friend to come with me too... but that's a 50/50... the button layout is a bit strange... i would rather prefer any of the following...

  BCD  or  AC
A             BD

but anyways... ya ANY subway station is fine with me... it's just after the TTC, the non-TO buses suck... so i'll be able to go to any station that you prefer... give me a time for when you think you'll be going also... btw awesome slash mode Galford avatar...

EDIT: if anyone wants to contact me, i can be reached at 647-773-2074

I think Kane has mentioned that:

   A  B  C
D

... is the default setup in Hong Kong. I may be misremembering though. It's definitely bizarre. Have you thought about asking the staff, or owner, about changing it? I would hope that a local arcade would be interested in catering to its customers (reasonable) requests.

i'll for sure ask the owners about it when i go there on sunday... that layout just makes C+D hard... and it is used often... where as with my preferred layout A+D is never used in kof and thus to me that's the better layout...
Title: Re: Toronto/Southern Ontario KOF (including XIII!)

I would also prefer either of the default settings myself.  Every simultaneous press located intuitively that way (well, except for EXs on the "L", I guess, but I'm still just relearning how to play KOF in general right now).  Plus with the "L", it's more similar to the layout of GG :) (as if I even really play GG these days *laughs* ).  We can try talking to the boss when we're there.  Really, I think the issue of one of the options not giving you a damned D button is important enough to warrant a change.

Hope your friend can come too, since more people is always better.  I should be good to go, but want to settle it for sure before giving a definite thumbs up.  Anyway, I know there're one or two days a week that Lovegety opens at 4:30 instead of 11 am, and I think sunday is one of them, so probably I'd be heading out around 5.

That's default Hong Kong layout alright.   Seeing how it's Toronto we're talking about that's not surprising either; tons of Cantonese people immigrated there.

I don't mind the HK default too much, in and of itself.  Sure, it'd take a little getting used to, but the main issue I have is that there's a 50/50 chance of missing a D button if you don't know how the machine is set up.  However, if addressing that can also give us a B,C,D/A setting, all the better ;)

It might be interesting to find out how the machines in BC are set up, since a lot of immigrants arrived there around the time when Hong Kong changed from being part of England to China.

Doublepost of doom, just to say that sunday looks clear for me.  Yay *laughs* .  Also, I'm a bit of a fool...Finch station is actually probably more en route for me than any other subway stop *laughs* .  Preliminary plan is to pick you (and hopefully your friend) up from Finch around 5 pm, stay at gety for a while (probably no later than 9...need to wake up early for work on weekdays, so I can't stay out too late :(), then drop you off at Finch before going home to beat myself up over how awful I am at KOF now.  Sound good?

Also, I'll try to get another player to come along.  Unlikely to happen, but worth a shot *laughs* .

GGs to mastaroth today.  It was a pretty good time (at least when we weren't playing against people spamming wake-up DPs after every knockdown...even the AI played smarter than that *laughs* ).  Sure, we were both fumbling around for a while (especially myself...at least you put together some nice stuff with Ralf at the end), but it was still fun :).  Think I'm going to stick with using Leona instead of Duo, at least until I can get some training mode time with him.  Need to get more comfortable with timing hit confirms too, but hell, it's like my first extended period of playing any KOF in about eight years, so I guess I can't feel TOO bad about it, right? *laughs*

GGs to Omegaryuji... Yesterday was awesome... Finally got to try out XIII and man the game feels good...

A few things about the game feels kinda awkward... On a few characters the canceling feels like they need to be done too quick (like Duo) ...And on some characters (like Shen) buffering feels like they need to be timed just right...

I was using Clark, Ralf, Maxima... Well Ralf is just crazy... Very good normals, pressure, specials... EX DM rules... Best iteration of him in any KOF thus far... Clark has good normals... j.D isn't as OP as XI but it's still pretty good... Overall i see why he is low tier... Maxima is OP with auto-guard... LOL... I auto-guarded Shen's DM, K's shoryu etc...

@ Omegaryuji - ya Duo definitely feels awkward... WTF is up with his cancels... Leona on the other hand seems strong... I think you just gotta go there more often and get used to the controls... Then you'll definitely be able to pull off nasty combos with Liz and Shen...
Title: Re: Toronto/Southern Ontario KOF (including XIII!)
Post by: omegaryuji on June 06, 2011, 05:30:00 PM
Yeah, definitely need to spend more time just getting used to the game.  Don't think I landed one proper juggle with Liz or Shen in a match (maybe not even in training mode *laughs* ).  Got close a couple of times but kept screwing up connecting their DMs (if not earlier *laughs* ).  Probably going to stick with Liz/Leona/Shen for a while...good to have at least one character I'm familiar with from past KOFs, and Liz/Shen can do some good stuff even without really being comfortable with them yet.  Wondering if I should explore Iori more, though, since he might fit in better than Shen (doesn't seem to need as much meter, which means more V-slasher and EX moon slasher for Leona...so nice to actually have a real reversal option with her instead of just tk'ed V-slasher for a change :) ), but they both seem to be about equally good, so might as well commit to one.  Plus Shen has a cooler outfit and SHEN WOO PUNCH and SHEN WOO GOES SSJ are so hype.

And I think it was Shen that kept stuffing your Neomax attempts with Clark, so he deserves some reward for that *laughs*
Title: Re: Toronto/Southern Ontario KOF (including XIII!)
Post by: t3h mAsTarOth...! on June 06, 2011, 07:13:35 PM
LMAO... ya i will NEVER do Clark's NM ever again... first of all it's a waste of meter... secondly i THOUGHT :( it has invincibility... but NO... it's neither invincible nor it is a grab... so it's terrible... i'm better off doing DC combos with him if i want to spend meter... i rather use b~f+AC which has invincibility... i figure i could do b~f+AC, b~f+C, DC, EX Volcan Punch, b~f+C, DC, EX Volcan Punch, b~f+C, dp+C and it should do about the same or more damage than doing his worthless NM...

and ya Iori and Shen both do low damage without meter, but high damage with meter... but even with no meter or 1 meter Iori has a LOT more options then Shen does... Shen is really scary as an anchor character with tons of meter... but Iori is scary even with just 1 meter...

Anyone up for another sunday afternoon/evening Gety run?  I'll be pretty tired since I'm going to be in waterloo on saturday (probably until like 2 am *laughs* ), but better to play XIII tired than not to play it at all.

Post by: omegaryuji on June 14, 2011, 04:11:38 PM
Cool stuff.  I was gonna post that I'll probably be there around 5 tomorrow *laughs*.  Probably won't be able to stay more than an hour or so, but it's better than nothing.

Also, this weekend is no good for me, but the office I work at is closed on friday, so I'll probably spend something like 2pm-6pm at Lovegety.  If anyone's around, drop on by ;) Edit2: Some personal matters came up and I couldn't make it out :(

Edit: Ugh, why am I so awful at this game :(?  I mean, I'm sure it didn't help matters that I spent all last week practicing AH3, then upon realizing in waterloo that we didn't have enough setups to really run a tournament, ended up playing 2002UM pretty much all day saturday, then practicing more AH3 this week before trying to play XIII today, but all of that is just a glossy veneer to cover up that I'm just really bad.

Ah well, at least I'm starting to do some good stuff like canceling cr.D's (had forgotten you could do that so often in KOF *laughs* ) and using some more command throws.  Need to use more hops (though I think that's partly the weird sticks on the machine, because I can hops much more easily on my own stick), to actually do stuff with drive meter (not counting accidentally activating HD mode when I'm trying to use CD because of the screwy button settings at Lovegety), and to get a better feeling for input timing because I keep screwing up so much.  The last one might be psychological, but I was so much better at doing things like clean anti-air moonslashers or hitconfirming pokes when I was just scrubbing around in 2002UM on saturday, so I think that the XIII input delay has at least a little bit to do with it.

I might stop by after work.  Finally started to get a little better feel for stuff lately...I'm still bad (a given, with how little time I've spent on XIII in general *laughs* ), but at least I can somewhat do basic Liz/Shen juggles and Duo's rekkas (they're apparently input a lot slower than they look like...timing is only slightly faster than Mature's).

I usually get off work around 4 pm, but unfortunately, I'm coming from the other direction, so it'd be a pretty long detour.  Plus, it's looking kind of unlikely that I can make it out at all anyway.  Forgot that I have some plans for the evening.

*checks timestamps on posts* Also, shoutouts to me for prompt responses, huh? *laughs*

Edit:
So, yeah, obvious wasn't able to make it today.  I'm off from work on friday, though, so I'll be at gety then...probably something like noon to 5 pm or so.

What the hell, Lovegety?  If you're not going to open on time, at least open within like 45 minutes of your supposed opening time.  Such a waste today.

Oh well.  Guess I'll just have to try again some other time.

So, apparently, the hours of operation sign at gety is just there to troll people, because a friend told me that it pretty much doesn't open before 3 at the earliest.  And, as I said on that day, people complain that arcades lose too much money....

Anyway, the next time I'll be free to put in some real time (like, more than just half an hour or so *laughs* ) is probably august 7th.

Edit: I seem to have horrible luck with stuff popping up at the last minute when I plan on going out for XIII.

Hey guys, I JUST realized that this thread was here haha anyway, some of you may have seen me at getty (big black guy, played andy, yuri and hwa jai).  Point is, i'm looking to STRONGLY support kof 13, including organizing/running tournies, round robins, special side events, etc. to boost this scene! The first tournament i'm looking to organize will be on December 17th, so look out for that.  Also, either after that tournament or just before, I will be hosting weekly or bi-weekly casuals either at my house, A&C games (near spadina station), Hero's World (somewhat near getty) and/or other venues.  Thoughts?

Yeah, mastaroth and I were talking yesterday, and he said he was looking at A&C as a potential place to hold gatherings.  I know that the airdasher guys are talking about maybe doing months events there, too, though I dunno if KOF guys would want to be attached with them or not (but it'd sure be more convenient for me that way *laughs* ).

I'm cool with most weekend stuff, after NEC.  I can bring a PS3 setup, in case we'd need an extra one (can bring a monitor as well if there's convenient free parking for me to not have to take public transit).  Don't care too much about where, but HW is pretty out there, so I'd prefer somewhere else.  Would offer to host as well, but the last time I did that for a gathering, people didn't want to come back, so that's probably a sign *laughs*

Feel free to PM me or send me your number via PM also to discuss any details about anything KOF/the KOF scene related (this applies to mastaroth and whoever else).  I go to A&C quite often and i'm almost positive they would be willing to accomodate us.  Airdasher guys....? as in BB/AH3 players? sounds like a plan.  I think it would be really important for us to be involved with the SF/MvC guys, due to their numbers and the potential exposure.

My house (near pmall) is usually a viable option, with the following rules kept in mind:

-clean up after yourself
-NO SMOKING INSIDE.  If you must, smoke outside and air yourself out.
- (If possible), help the cause by bringing a system and/or a stick.

I also have a camcorder, so we can record stuff.  HW is a bit inconvenient for me also, just wanted to mention it though.  They didn't want to come back?!? lol what happened?

GGs TSF! it was fun playing you.  We need to play again soon.  If anybody wants to chat, feel free to post on here or PM me.  Let's strive for a friendly, helpful community that is above the drama :D

Yeah, BB/AH3/Melty (GG, too, but I don't think anyone plays just that as a main game anymore, and I'm probably the only guy outside of waterloo who puts any time into HnK *laughs* ).  Of course, it'd be good to get some mingling going on with as many other communities as possible, but I was just mentioning the airdashers since I'm into some of those as well, while I don't really like SF4/MvC3/MK9 *laughs*

Quote
They didn't want to come back?!? lol what happened?
Probably a mixture of my place being kind of out of the way (even though I'm close to gety and I gave rides from transit stops), there not being much selection for places to eat without taking a car, the HVAC sucking (so it tends to be a little on the chilly side, though it's better now that the windows are tarped over for winter), and the BB community having a bunch of people who talk about wanting to play the game but won't put in any effort to actually go somewhere for casuals.  Not saying EVERYONE who likes BB is like that, just the particular players I know are more like that than not in general.

I see.  I have played sf4/mk/mvc3 since they came out and man... do those games lack depth and quality.  I'm not saying we should hang out with them to be super chummy and main those games, i'm saying we can make a good impression, get some of them trying the game and taking an interest and all of a sudden we (hopefully) have 24+ ppl every tournament.
Title: Re: Toronto/Southern Ontario KOF (including XIII!)
Post by: omegaryuji on November 15, 2011, 03:49:32 PM
Of course nobody's saying that we all have to learn SF4 to try getting people into KOF *laughs* .  Just at least show them the game and try to get them hype for it.

Anyway, if things start out small, then for casual get-togethers, we can do what we've been doing for AH3 in waterloo: everyone has multiple entries (character-locked and trying to avoid repeating characters) until you fill out a decent sized bracket (been using 32-man bracket for ~6 people in AH3).  It might sound sort of strange and awkward, but it's actually a pretty fun way of getting experience playing with/against a lot of the characters.  I guess since KOF is 3v3, we could relax the "no repeated characters" part a bit, though I can definitely come up with at least 3 complete teams of different characters I'd like to play since the cast in XIII is so awesome *laughs* .

Title: Re: Toronto/Southern Ontario KOF (including XIII!)
Post by: omegaryuji on November 15, 2011, 06:11:31 PM
Yeah, that happens (especially when some people are too lazy to enter more than twice and then someone else has to enter like 6 times to make up for it *laughs* ).  You just pick whichever one of your entries you want to advance and move on.

Hey guys,

I looking for some cool people to play KOF with, online/offline.

I've been playing KOF for a long time(since KOF 96). I got my first taste of KOF when i was living in europe.
I just really looking to level up my game up some cool people. i've tried playing at A&C but too many people on a wed night...

I am going to grab my copy today and if anyone wants to play just hit me up.

If any of you guys wanna come just msg me and I can confirm meetup times and what not.

I live around the Warden/Hwy7 area, so very close to Hero's World actually. I have never been there because I didnt know there would be KOF casuals there, so I am still playing at lovegety occasionally.

I love the idea of casuals and tournaments too. Let me know if you need help in terms of that.

I think we should organize regular Lovegety meet ups, would any of you be interested in something like that? I believe that arcade experience is the key to levelling up our scene. Playing under high pressure situations will do that. There's always something at stake; you're putting your tokens on the line, the whole community is watching you and losing means you'll have to wait your turn to play again. We are very lucky to have a KOF XIII cab in our city and we should take full of advantage of it. For me, it'd also be a way of saying thank you to Lovegety's owner (aka "The Boss") for trying to keep the scene alive.

I was thinking it could be on Friday nights, since we're most likely to catch the interest of randoms who play KOF XIII but aren't active in the community yet. I'm open to suggestions, of course. We can also host arcade tournaments and ranbats with the Boss's permission once we as a community get more time with the game.

Thoughts?

Is the arcade version updated with console changes?

Not only is Lovegety running Vanilla KOF, the control scheme is Blazblue style. It's awkward for those like myself who are trying to become familiar with the default layout.

GGs to all I played today at the A and C casuals! We had two KOF setups running with players on them AT ALL TIMES. It was refreshing to talk to some people from the forum as well. If you guys can make it down the Weeklies at A and C post here and we'll hook something up.

In the meantime, look out for Ontario's FIRST KOFXIII TOURNAMENT, also being held at A and C games. I believe the date is December 11th. Practice up, and I hope to meet some of you guys there!

I'm probably going to run the BlazBlue button config, it seems like it'll make charging that D Drop Kick easier  ;)

I tried to buy this game yesterday at Promenade Mall and it was sold out...that came as a huge surprise to me, but hopefully that means a bigger playerbase for our scene.

Networking is the name of game. KOF is still really fresh, and many people have barely scratched the surface regarding gameplay. So even if you're not planning on entering try to come out if you can, we're all learning - and it'll be more fun if we do it together. For this upcoming tournament: It serves as a good way to introduce the KOF to the fighting community in Toronto and let them know that we're here to stay.

That being said, there are a bunch of initiatives slated to take place after the A and C tournament. Casual venues will be up and running for any who want to get in games and improve. All I see are exciting things for the future of this game. Get hype haha

after getting a few OCV's yesterday (1 against an actual decent player), Mai is my opening character for sure... she's fucking sick... her speed, priority & mobility is just insane... her taunt is the best... massive bouncing jugs... lmao...

Oh and the guy you OCV-ed was probably S-Blade. If it was him, they welcome to the club. I'm the founder.  ;)

When the week of the tournament hits I'll post a link to all the information, which shouuuld be on facebook. In the meantime, come down to A and C on Tuesdays/Wednesdays for KOF casuals! Wednesdays is so packed with people for SF4 and MVC3 that I think we should push to make KOF Tuesdays a consistent thing. We'd have the whole venue to ourselves, and could make 5-6 stations KOF if we wanted to.

Damn...that's pretty far. The casuals on Tuesday are from 3pm-8pm. Wednesdays from 3pm-10pm (sometimes 11).
If it's a hassle, post here when you have a day off and lets see if we can get some casuals going. Part of this thread's function is to try and accommodate the schedule of everyone in the scene. Got free time? Holla!

I'm also part of staff over at Toronto HQ (http://torontohq.com/ (http://torontohq.com/)), who have created a great venue for people from all fighting game backgrounds to come and play. There are 5 setups there, with at least 6 sticks available, and we have SF4/Tekken 6/UMvC/Guilty Gear/3rd Strike...you name it. I've already got the green light to host KOF level up sessions, community casuals, and even small tournaments there. As a keyholder, I am at the service of the newly formed KOF community!

Toronto HQ is simply another place we can use to gather alongside, A and C games, and C 3's dojo.

All I'm saying is, everyone should get into the habit of posting here when they have free time and want to play. I'm sure SOMETHING can be organized.  :)

Yup. They have a basement space right next door that can fit upwards of 40 people. Lots and lots of space!

Man, last night Helios and I were GRINDING KoFXIII for hours at Toronto HQ. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun with a fighter. 3-4 hours straight and I wasn't bored for a second.

A and C games have finally made the event on FB for the tournament. All the information you need to come out to the province's first KOFXIII tournament is right here!

I finally mastered Raiden's HD combos; they do 705 damage with 2 bars or 805 damage with 3 bars, how do those numbers compare to the rest of the cast? Is it worth using that extra stock for only 100 more damage?

Edit: Nevermind, I discovered an HD combo that does 807 for 2 bars :) That's a pretty good meter-to-damage ratio, as far as I understand.

Finally got registered for DC forums so yay for that. To all those who attended the A & C tourney on Dec 11, I was the big Chinese guy with the Fatal Fury cap.

If there are offline sessions going on, I would like to hear about them (assuming work and study time don't kill me in the upcoming months). I'm interested in learning XIII's system and how to make the best of it.

And before I forget, Merry Christmas to all and hopefully, we'll see an explosion of KOF activity for 2012.

Hey all, sorry for the thread necromancy, but I figured it would be better than making a new thread about this. I'm currently living in Australia and I've just been approved to work/study in Canada, and I'm looking to travel to Toronto for 6~12 months later this year.

I was interested in knowing if there's much of a scene in Toronto for KOF, from this thread it looks like there is one. Where is the best place to look into it and eventually get in contact? Are you able to tell me much about the FGC in general (I also play VF) or point me to a forum/site where i can learn more? :)

I would like to know this as well. Since LoveGety Station shut down last month, I'm not sure where a local scene now exists for KOF outside of A & C, which I'm pretty much unavailable to reach on a regular basis due to the amount of time it takes to get there by public transportation(Around 2+ hours coming from Markham). Is there another scene around the Markham/GTA area that I can go to or is A&C the only one? I've been really meaning to start playing KOFXIII for real and make it my main fighting game, but with the terrible online and no local scene I can frequent, I'm stuck just playing story mode, doing the trials, or sticking in training mode, which of course doesn't give much in the way of motivation to really improve my play.

It's in downtown Toronto, which makes it unavailable for me to go to, since I'm from Markham, and the bus ride/subway there would be way too long. Here's the address:
