King / Re: King (Console)
July 25, 2012, 11:53:21 PM
Spent most of the day messing around in the lab and when I got to King I believe I discovered something interesting. I dunno if they has been stated before though so sorry if this is old news.

If you are ever zoning with her and your opponent gets in, you could reset the position so to say by hoping at them with  ;c and canceling that into  ;d Venom Strike.  If they block this midcreen puts you about 3 1/2 characters apart and allows you to run away some more.  If they get hit they are sent to the other side of the screen and you've netted 127 damage.  Useful for running away I feel without backdashing all the time and it might throw them off to see King coming at them.

The downside to this, however, is that you should not do it when you're close to the corner.  I've tested it and EX Ranbu's like Iori's can punish her because she has a bit of landing recovery so if you opponent has fast moving horizontal attack you should not do it near the corner.  However a possible offset to this downside is if you're in the corner and they are in your face use GCCD, run at them, and Hop  ;c into  ;d Venom Strike.  That should give you a lot more breathing room though it does cost a meter but whatever, King does not necessarily need it and can get it back.  Personally I try to play a mix of Rushdown and Zoning King so for those who do the same this might help you fuck with your opponents mind.

I'll take this to offline sets to see how effective it is and see if I can't make better use of it in other ways.

I can't think of anything else at the moment, but I hope this helps. Do you have any other questions regarding Mature???

So I'm just now reading your and first I would like to say thank you for your advice.  I've been playing her extensively and have been getting better with her.  I've learned to not use despair cross ups so much as my opponents have been catching on to it.  I'm just now learning that HD combo you suggested and it's getting there.  I still drop her [Qcb. ;a xx Qcb. ;b] HD loop sometimes when it comes time cancel into super(I get lost in the rekkas :P) but it's getting better nonetheless.

I guess my question is now, how to use her better on rushdown?  I've been abusing her St. ;b xx Qcb. ;b frame trapish thing and have got a few HD combos off it.  But other than that I can't seem to do much else.  I can't find any good normal cross up setups and her hop/in options seem lacking.  I most go in with hop with  ;a and go from there.

I'm kind of inclined against zoning(not a rule or something, I'm just bad at it lol).  I play King and I rushdown for the most part with her and it's surprising effective, atleast the way I go about doing it.  I know her  ;b button is good for zoning and using her fireball given space is also key.   Her jumping  ;d destroys Benimaru's advances in the air given a proper read.  As far as zoning goes I believe I can develop that on my own should I need to.

So I've been playing Betty since January and all this time I rarely use her extended, non-metered HD combos.  Generally when I'm in a position to do it, I just do her regular DC combos that can net me about 550+ damage anyway.  The only time I really hit the HD is when I can do something simple and kill or when I have 4 meters and if I get a clean hit Neo Max from EX DM and watch damn near 900+ health dissapear.

So my question is:  Is doing HD loops with her necessary?  It's kind of a pain to keep the Dp. ;a xx Qcf. ;a loop consistent, atleast for me, because of the timing and the possibility of getting her DM.  One corner HD loop I am practicing, however, is the Dp. ;c -> Qcf. ;c -> Dp. ;a xx Qcb. ;d xx Qcf. ;c -> Qcf. ;c -> Dp. ;a xx Qcb. ;d xx Qcf. ;c -> Qcf. ;c, etc.  But that's only because it looks cool to see her swag back and forth mid combo.  Kinda hard too, once again atleast to me, because you have to hit that Dp. ;a just right or else the Qcf. ;c's wont juggle properly.

General Discussion / Learning new characters.
July 25, 2012, 05:01:00 AM
This might be a TLDR so there is my warning.

So at the moment I find myself in an annoying predicament.  I currently run King/Leona/Elisabeth on my main squad.  I consider myself fairly advanced, if not upper intermediate at the game and I hold my own.  I've won a tournament in my area and have had the opportunity to have casuals with some top players so I can safely say I know how to play the game.

I don't mean to brag I just wanted to establish my standing with the game as to avoid any misunderstanding about me being a new player and receiving advice amongst that assumption.  Now onto my problem.

I have recently decided to branch out and learn new characters.  I feel that you have to learn how to play other characters in order to understand them, the game, and possible matchups against them.  I love my main team but it does get boring only playing them in extended casuals.  So, I decided to learn others with the hope of getting some to the level of my main team, adding to my arsenal, and generally getting better at the game.  Sadly this has not happened.

Now my main team got to where they are after a long period of time(Like 3 months): I had the learn the game, learn them, etc.  But for some reason when I want to go to other characters, I cannot function.  For example, the first ones I picked up were K', Iori, and Robert.  I learned their combos and what to do but when I took them to sets I got ran over.  Even after getting matches in with them I still got bodied.  I soon lost hope and went back to my main squad.

Same thing happened when I picked up Ex Kyo, Iori, and Saiki.  Once again I learned them and felt good using them but I can't seem to make them work.  Once I get put on defense I just feel helpless, in contrast to my main team where I have an idea what to know at all time.   In some sets I will just get ran over to the point where I act like I don't know how to play the game, i.e Random Dps, Lot's of Jump-Ins, and just overall dumb decisions.  And I feel like even though I am learning a new character, this is detrimental to me.

On a nicer note, however, I recently picked up Mature and I seem be doing better with her.  I can actually function in matches with her and seem to be doing better.  I'd say she's the closest in skill to my mains.  The thing is, I've done the exact same thing with her I've done with the others(except maybe I actually like the character a lot more).  So I don't understand how I'm doing better with her when I probably put more work into K' and get stomped out.

It's dawned on me as I wrote this that maybe I need to simply stick through them and keep playing them till they get on par with my main squad.  The thing is, now that I know the game infinitely better than I knew it back when I first started(this is my first kof btw), I feel that the leveling up process should not be so difficult.  So that leads me to believe that there is something I'm doing wrong.  Maybe I should just play with characters I feel comfortable with because honestly I wanted to learn the likes of Iori/Beni/Kyo, etc just becuase they were really good.  And the moment might arise in a tournament where my characters just could not handle, say a Mr. Karate, and I could call upon Top Teirs to make it a little easier.

To wrap it up, I would just like to ask what it is that ya'll do when you want to learn new characters?  What are some practices you employ?  How do you gauge their progress and if they are not up to standards how do you remedy the situation?

Also do you think it's okay to have pocket top teirs/characters to use in certain matchups?  Should you just play characters you're ultimately comfortable with?

SN:  Sorry for the long post and if it seems jumbled, I just sorta wrote as I thought it up.

Mature / Re: Mature (Console)
July 08, 2012, 05:21:31 PM
Trying to learn Mature at the moment and I have a few questions.  Mainly how am I supposed to play her.  I made the mistake of not realizing how gross she was when I first got the game so she's on my secondary squad.  Also I got really good with Vice(also on secondary squad) when I was searching for more characters after getting a good setting with my main squad, and I tend to play them somewhat similary(with normals atleast XD ).

I know that this character can be a beast but I need a little footing.   I've taken her out to battle offline and I have hit, and dropped, several HD combos and a few dirty setups with Despair and that Nocturnal(?) Tears move.  But I still feel uneasy with her.  Any help would be appreciated.

Quick question, how do you do the corner carry slashes?  I can hit confirm HD from Cr.  ;b's no problem but I'm having trouble getting a full screen carry.  I want to make the threat of an HD with her solid so I'm determined to get this.

From what I've experimented with so far, I see that I probably have to drive cancel Grand Saber into Moon Slasher after the first rep but the cancel window and switching between charges so quick(atleast faster than corner HD combos) is kind of quirky with me.  I also found that doing EX Moon Slasher in that cancel pops them higher but I can't follow up.  Any tips?

Mai Shiranui / Re: Mai Shiranui (Console)
July 08, 2012, 03:56:46 AM
Okay so I took her in a set locally and it did not go so well(Naturally as it being my first time using her in a real match).  My opponent ran Andy/Iori/Benimaru in that order while I ran Mai/Mature/Vice(three characters I'm currently in the process of learning) and it took all I had to get past Andy.  I managed to land a couple HD combos when I could but for the most part she died and my Mature and Vice had to clean up.

So a couple more questions.   What are a few of her mixups?  I hit him with that knee drop a couple times as well as a few empty hop lows/grabs.  I found myself abusing Mai's ground CD alot as it goes over lows, and all Andy does is Cr.  ;b xx Elbow.  Is this recommended?  Also is there a specific way to time her EX Ryuu Enbu combo to where I'll always get the 3 following Ryuu Enbus.  I'm starting to get the hang of it but I drop it more often than hit.  And getting the air throw at the end, should I get 3 Ryuu Enbus, seems f*$king impossible atm.   :(

I'm really trying to learn this character but I'm starting to see that she is pretty damn difficult(And I thought that I had it bad with Leona being on my main squad).  I'm not going to drop her but I'm kinda trying to get her up to speed with my Mature and Vice so I can learn all three together without one being too much dead weight.  Thanks!

Mai Shiranui / Re: Mai Shiranui (Console)

So I've decided to add Mai to my arsenal of characters.  My question is as a beginning Mai player, what are some things I need to familiarize myself with?  I am already familiar with the game and consider myself Adept in it, so I don't need help with Ultra basic things.  Thanks.

SN: I kind of find myself trying to master the Cr.  ;b -> Cr.  ;a -> Cr.  ;c link.  I like the feel of it and it nets good damage if I can consistently hit confirm it in to Hcf. ;d.  Just wondering it mastering that link is imperative, especially since I've seen it miss due to spacing.

Well i'm not sure whether you will understand or not what i'm saying ...
And I hope it's not irrelevant

Greatly appreciate you taking your time out and giving us critique.  As he said we will more than likely get another set recorded.  Also as far as the 99 sec thing we noticed that after this was recorded and have made the switch. Did not pay attention it at all.

But yeah all we really wanted was just feedback on our gameplay as virtually it is only us two playing the game where we live.  We are trying to get better so we want as much feedback as possible due to the lack of people in our scene.  Thanks again.

I finally watched the rest of the video, sorry it took this long, but now I can make a final analysis of your gameplay.

First I'd like to say that you both displayed great skill and knowledge of the game, and you both handled yourselves well showing a lot of confidence in your actions. But now I'll point out some things I noticed about each of you.

Player 1: I've changed my opinion on Leona being your strongest. I'd now say that Elisabeth is your strongest, displaying a "cool under fire" style that suits her. Your Leona is still good though, you know how to combo with her well. Your Vice is pretty impressive, especially with those comebacks you made. You know your stuff, and you certainly can utilize all of your characters strengths well, so I'm not sure you need to work on anything.

Player 2: Yuri is definitely your strongest character, you know how to really keep up pressure with her. Both your Mai and Athena are really good at spacing and rushdown, which is important with those characters in mind. With all your characters you did well using normals to keep your opponent in check and in the corner. What bothered me was that you seemed too eager to use EX moves, especially with Yuri. And also it seemed you tried going for elaborate combos instead of practical ones that would have done more damage. I'd say work on those points and you'd have yourself a solid team.

I too feel that my Elisabeth is my strongest character as she is also my favorite.  I feel like I have to work on my Vice, however, as in the first 3 matches I was just jumping CD everywhere, and while it's a good move to spam there were a lot of times I could have got him with a CG.  Like my friend said we play each other a lot so we know how to beat the other but I tried to break away from my usual plan on fighting him in this set and try new things.  Anyways thanks for you input, I really appreciate it.

Me and my friend(Kokujindayo) finally sat down and got to record an extended set against each other and feedback/critiques would be welcomed.  We both consider ourselves to be upper intermediate to advanced so tips on how to up our game would be nice.

Killey, Thanks for that information.  Since that day I have been leveling up my Elisabeth and now I have a solid idea on how to play her.  I used to think her normals sucked but now I take full advantage of them when I can.

Also I have uploaded a simple video on how to do a nice amount of damage with Elisabeth given 4 meters an HD.  Since I run her on anchor and try to be careful about my meter I tend to be in this situation more than not.  While the combo is not as extravagant as most, I feel that it's simplicity and damage output is good if you wanna just get rid of a character quickly and not have to worry about dropping the combo.  Anyways here it is:

Elisabeth Branctorche 89.5% Combo(HD +4 Meters)
