my question for david kong, why do you play robert if you think he's so bad? even i've put down leona as a sub character, and i've mained her up until recently.

I've put so much damn time into him that it's really hard for me to let go. Also, I'd be lying if I said Robert isn't really fun to play. At this point, any other character I pick up won't perform as well for me as robert currently does. But i'm working on it! Hopefully in a few more months my karate and EX iori will be tournament level. Until then Robert is my best bet along with king and vice.

I'm not really new to fighting games, but I am new to getting a competitive edge in one.  Recently picked up Kof XIII after Evo, and I really do love the game.  I am just getting so stuck on practicing: I feel like after practicing for only a short session, I start losing focus, and get extremely frustrated.  I know the inputs are a lot stricter in this game compared to SFIVAE for instance, but I feel as if I have beat myself over the head with the same basic combos, and I cannot get them down, nor can I sit down to practice for more than like 30 minutes at a time.  Any advice on staying focused, or to make practicing more bearable and less like I'm just smashing my head into a wall?

First off, don't get discouraged! I can tell you from first hand experience that I know exactly what you are talking about. Everyone has trouble with combos when first starting out. My advice is to break down your combos to the smallest pieces possible. For example, the combo might be, jump C, close C, fwd A, special move. If you're having trouble with it, practice each piece of it separately. Start off with just jump C into close C over and over again. Then close C into fwd A, etc etc.

If this is too boring for you to do in training mode, then try practicing this in arcade mode. This way, at least you can unlock some colors as you practice lol. Also, I have to say that in this game, training mode is essential. You will NEED to spend lots of hours in training mode to be able to land the harder combos in the game. If practicing the same combo over and over starts to bore you, then stop for a few minutes and just go crazy! Set your meter to infinite and see what kind of wacky setups you can find. Don't hesitate to experiment.

Training Room / Re: Bread and Butter combos in KoF13

Although we don't have formal "guides" per se,  I highly recommend this thread for some very practical combos:

http://dreamcancel.com/forum/index.php?topic=2019.0;viewResults

Also, when you say bread and butter, what exactly do you mean? Every character has optimized combos (meaning, doing max damage for a given amount of meter in a specific position on the screen).

For every character you main, you should learn the following combos for mid screen and in the corner:

no meter
1 bar no drive
1 bar 1 drive
2 bars 1 drive
2 bars HD
etc...

If they kept the exact same system, and added like 12 characters to make KoFXIII UM, assuming it's balanced, I could see that being the game that lasts for 10 years.

I lost all faith in SBO after that debacle last year concerning the international teams, and the shady apology which was given afterwards.

In regards to putting the spotlight on up and coming communities outside of California, this is something I've been thinking about for a little while. I was thinking of maybe doing a "Scene Spotlight" article series on the front page of DC where we can give exposure to growing local scenes, like Las Vegas, New York or North Carolina. Maybe we can also have some of these scene's representatives as guests on the Dream Cancel Podcast. I dunno if there would be interest for this though...

We need a new thread title, now that evo is done lol

Also, EX Geneikyaku (Lightning Legs) only builds the opponent about 33% of 1 drive. Of all the "really fast multiple hit" type moves though, it does build the most meter for the opponent. Ryo's EX punches build a good amount of meter for his opponent too nearly 1/2 a meter, as does Kensou's.

Mr. Karate's however, barely builds any meter for the opponent (this character...)

As for tournies, unfortunately I don't get the chance to go to any due to my duties. Except for EVO, where I had a chat with you, David, and went 4-2 (1-1 winners, 3-1 losers).

When I get back to the States I'll definitely have to attend more events. ...And learn to drive...

AirLancer, I finally took the time to look over your Robert thread. That's some really really good stuff that I had not considered before. haha I feel kinda blown up, there is obviously a lot more to this character than I really considered. Although it a lot of it seems extremely situational, I suppose we still need to wait to see a Robert player really take it to the next level before I, or anyone, can really make judgements on tier.

This combo actually is pretty good, thanks! It does 757, but you're right, it can be done anywhere and doesn't build the opponent that much meter. But still, in comparison to high tier character's HD combos, Robert's are still lacking. The standard for midscreen 3 bars plus HD is around 850-900 for top tier.

I'm home now so can do some confirming:

jD, sC, f+B, HD, sC, f+B, DP+A [DC] qcf+A [SC] Ranbu, Neomax

Does 855 dmg.

Oh I see, I was using fwd B Fwd A into HD, which scales it more.

(sigh) A man can wish... In any case, do any of you actually main Robert? If so, are you guys tournament players? I really get frustrated when I hear everyone saying that Robert is good, when in fact his many tools aren't as good as people think they are. At least he's not as bad as Mai! hahaha

I think mai is alot better than you give her credit david, have you played chaotic blue's mai?

I have played chaotic blue's Mai. No disrespect to him, but my opinion on Mai hasn't changed.

There will be provided enough people show up. For the past two weeks the numbers haven't justified having a tournament, because of the post evo burn out.

Mind telling me what combo this is? And does it work midscreen? I find this hard to believe, as someone who has spent tons of hours trying to find optimal HDs with Robert.

Works anywhere, HD and 3 bars:

jD, sC, f+B, DP+A or C [Super Cancel] Ranbu, Neomax (max cancel on final hit of Ranbu)

If you want a bit of extra damage then you can DC into a fireball after the DP before super canceling into Ranbu.

Over 800dmg iirc. Can also be started via lows using the hit confirm Tyrant mentioned above and also using just low Bs.
