General Discussion / Re: KOFXIV Announced for 2016

At long last, I bought a PS4 yesterday. I've just watched the KOFXIV PSE trailer on my TV -I can't connect my laptop to my TV right now because of a number of issues on my laptop's side-...it's BEAUTIFUL. Not GGXrd beautiful, but still very pleasant to look at. Good thing there are a ton of previous KOFs and a variety of PS4 fighters to play while waiting for this game, because watching the trailer on a TV made me a little more impatient x'D

Thank you videoman ^^ Sounds like we're gonna see touch of death combos back after all? xD

Now, what's this? Ono-style trolling or a subtle Geese/Rock/Raging Storm user confirmation?

Thank you for your advice ^^ The stick I'm gonna buy, I'm calling it "all Hayabusa" because it has new buttons called Hayabusa -just like the joystick- instead of Kuro. They're lower than the Kuros, rounded about the edge -sharp edges on Kuros caused some stir, and I can't blame those who criticize it- and a fancy matte finish (I couldn't care less, but hey, it's a feature xD. Hopefully they don't squeak anymore...

Here you are the Japanese official product page -I didn't find this model on the USA site

Okay, it's official I'll have to buy the all Hayabusa HRAP. The Brook converter maps touchpad to L3+R3, but most PS2 sticks don't have L3 and R3, or at least the Jap Tekken 5 doesn't have them. Hope Brook issues a newer firmware with a different mapping.

So, the default Hayabusa could feel like a shorter throw JLF to me, right? That's what I've been suspecting about this joystick all the time. If that's the case, I think I'll like it without any mod.

Your sticks are always a sight to behold :D Thank you for the artwork link ^^

Today I've bought a PS4 since SFV is almost ahead -didn't enroll in time for the last beta...-, and sadly, I'll be forced to buy a new stick, unless a PS2 to PS4 converter is in the works with appropriate countermeasures to the connection timeout bullshit made in Sony. Since I set my heart on the all Hayabusa HRAP*, I'm glad to hear you like the Hayabusa joystick -although modded- to the point you equipped four sticks with it. Yes I saw them in the sticks topic, amazing works of art...if you lived in Italy I'd mail my stick to you so that you modded it xD

*Waiting for the holidays to end before buying it, because the package would get lost in the Christmas gifts frenzy otherwise...Italian post service is SHIT.

That's exactly what happens to me, I only have to rely on buffering when facing right for this cancel (a couple days ago my execution was even worse than now and I needed to buffer even when facing left). Guess it's one of the many subtleties in the KOF input programming.

I mean just the lever, not the whole arcade stick peripheral. I'm open to add more options to the poll if you suggest them.

Long story short, JLF is my favorite lever ATM. I find its "mushiness" perfect for fighting games. For my taste, Seimitsu-like levers require too much force for games where you need to execute fast and accurate circular motions.

The details: I started my journey into the world of above-average arcade sticks with the Namco Arcade Stick, which is supposed to mimic Seimitsu lever and buttons*, the stuff you found in a genuine MVS cabinet. Shortly after, I managed to find an used Japanese Tekken 5 Stick, the one with the lightning artwork. I bought it because I didn't know some licensed HRAP-like sticks don't have QD wires for buttons although they're equipped with a JLF, so I had to get help soldering QD wires to the PCB -I don't have any basic soldering skills. You can imagine my shock when I found out the awful stock buttons on that beast can't be easily swapped xDDDDD After making it full Sanwa, I love it.

I wish I had the skills to add PS4 compatibility and a touchpad...or that Hori made a PS4 stick with an Astro City type chassis. I miss that round, heavy design.

*Is it right? If yes, do any of you know what exact lever and button variation the Namco Stick is based on?

@Amedo: for XI, I didn't specify because it's the KOFXI section, sorry ^^;
@Crazy Li: thank you for somewhat confirming about the super cancel buffering.

Now I remember it, I saw it as a thumbnail preview for a Youtube video. Thank you for posting it ^^ Kyo's hair could use some tweaking, but I wouldn't mind this style.

@solidshark: any links or hints to recover that Kyo edit, please? I don't remember seeing it myself.
I totally agree that if someone has a clear vision about art direction, pursuing it to the fullest is better, and graphics have never been a deal breaker in KOF to me, it's just that I kinda enjoy this "what if" chat stuff :D

I got the "Andy and Leona" links back. These edits are even more bold than the Angel one, kinda like an oil paint filter...they remind me about a rumor saying SNKP was originally going for an oil painting style.

@desmond: I somewhat agree with you, I mean I don't see nothing so horribly wrong with the KOFXIV art style. You know what? Though I've always been a manga/anime fan, I like how SNK(P) has never gone for a full anime-like shading style for characters, which Capcom did in CPS2 Marvel games, DS and SFA, and ArcSys does all the time. It's a style, a mindset that deserves respect in my opinion, although it could lead to serious flaws in game development -I guess XII-XIII would have been more complete without the final shading and lighting phase.

@Fluke: Chang being the most polished character would explain a thing or two about he being in the demo instead or more popular fighters...also, you reminded me how the focus went on Chang's beard in one of the questions in the latest interview with Oda at Famitsu xD

I can only agree about how King looks poor in the latest trailer...what bothers me the most is her Trap Shot pose, I don't like it at all. Andy looks unfinished, but not so poor as King. Also, facial expressions need work.

I'm confident every character's gonna look like Iori at the very least, since I find him the most polished char in the demo. What character do you guys think is closest to completion visually among those six?

By the way, some Japanese KOF fans are retouching screenshots in order to show how "easy" it could be to make the characters more pleasant to the masses...or at least I think that's their intention xD I saw one example involving Andy and Leona which I can't recover right now, and this one...

Do you think implementing a shading technique like this one is viable for 50 characters in 12 months? (given KOFXIV launches as late as possible next year)

Someone sensible at last. That's PS3/X360 graphics, not PSX nor PS2. Laban even went as far as saying it looks PS4 in person, but I don't wanna get so optimistic. SFIV models just have flashier shading...and more steroids than XIII Ralf and Clark could even dream of. The two "finished" stages look a bit too similar in structure to me -I suspect Super Arena technically is an alternate version of Neo Esaka-, and the aquarium is obviously in a preliminary state, but other than that they look good.

The only criticism I feel like moving to SNKP is that TGS2015 was way too early to show any in-game footage. Only the fiercest fans -like me LOL- enjoyed the first 3 teasers without complaining on the graphics. But it could be Sony demanding tight deadlines...looks like Sony is investing in KOFXIV more than Ledo themselves, and so they have urgent demands.

Bottom line: I really suggest reading Laban's insanely long, meticulous KOFXIV write-up at SRK, so that we all focus on the gameplay -the amount of research he managed to do at a showfloor booth is crazy- and forget about the graphics for a while. It makes you think "fuck yeah, I wanna try out everything he wrote".

Resurrecting this thread because I'd like to ask if you can confirm or deny a possible answer to the second question.

Is the best (or even only) Oniyaki to Orochinagi shortcut ;fd ;df ;dn ;db ;bk ;df ;c~ ;dn ;df ;fd ;a ?
I think I kinda understood the principles behind the default command combo, but I can't be sure about them because my execution is subpar at best.

@Micky: I either beleive that is one of the unfinished things and will turn into the British flag, or it could be a flag similair to the "southern" flag, representing "south town" ?
If the South Town Team is real, it could be a southern symbol ^^

I forgot to say the other thing I don't like about the graphics so far: the aquarium stage. It's obviously in a preliminary state, so I'm confident it will be improved like Neo Esaka and Super Arena. (I'm also re-editing my previous message since I had already written "and" but I forgot to complete my statement xD)

@GL: the interview translation link doesn't work :( Do you know other possible locations? Thank you anyway ^^

According to what I've read and seen till now, gameplay looks kinda like KOF98 with some XIII stuff and little additions/changes thrown into the mix. Now everyone got 2 supers and both of them are EXable -at least the demo chars. Kyo's rekka moves are about as many as in XI, and as a Kyo fan I'm so happy about it xD I like what I've seen so far.

Besides, the leak is at least partially true: 48+2 chars -those "windows" in previous teasers xD-, 16 teams + 2 solos, all the chars revealed so far are in the leaked list. I don't expect that leak to be completely true, but now I think a couple other details will be confirmed, alongside the most obvious ones -some teams are no brainers at this rate.

@shinefist: yay for close/far variations :D After reading SFV got rid of them, I had lost any hope to see them fully implemented back in KOF. Multiple normal throws are also back, at least for some chars.

Last but not least, I read somewhere a lot of boos came from the crowd...is it true?
Now, on to unleashing my inner fanboy xD I know graphics will always be PS2 tier for 99% people, but in all honesty I like them. No matter how much effort I put into seeing something horribly wrong with them, I just can't -I still play early 90s games without complaining and I know I'm not the only one, so playing a game from a non-doujin developer with subpar graphics isn't an issue at all to me-, except for King's unbearable Trap Shot pose and the almost lifeless aquarium stage, but I'm sure they're either from an earlier development stage (and already improved) or SNKP will tweak them. Angel is BEAUTIFUL!! *Sanji style heart shaped eyes* (I'm crazy for latinas) LMAO at SNKP maybe retconning Billy as Norwegian xDDDDD Ralf isn't skinny, so I hope a bit of fear about body build variety has worn off. Pre-fight intros are back, at long last. I don't like the life/power bars, but I think it's like KOFXII where they were simplistic in the first videos and were replaced with something richer.

I'm so happy to hear actual KOF music back in!! Is that piece of music right after the cutscene a new track? Or just part of the new Esaka? Either way, I love it. I also like the main song more and more, now that the clip used in the trailer is a bit longer. As much as I don't like "Linkin Park style" music, it surprisingly got stuck in my head. Kyo's voice still sounds not Nonaka to me...I'd be a bit sad if he had left this role, but I like Kyo's XIV voice. Yasui as Iori is fantastic like always :D
