Vice / Re: Vice
« on: October 04, 2010, 11:28:46 PM »
Ok, so we KNOW Vice's EX Decide has anywhere juggle properties, right? And Gore fest, traditionally un-comboable afterwards, leaves them in the air after it... is it possible for an anywhere juggle not to catch off it, as well? Could you possibly hop back, and then do EX Decide? Do they fall too fast, are they too close, or is this one situation where SNKP just ensured that NOTHING could happen at all?

If anything, I'd imagine Splash would make a dangerous mix-up option after the Gorefest knockdown, especially when it's fixed and without possible character-freezing glitches.

That also begs the question, is normal Decide a good way to catch backrollers? Or would it be easily blocked out of roll recovery?

Good on the KCE/Sisters crew for showing some variety. I always find it slightly funny how Goro and Takuma's bugs don't seem to both anymore much... people seem less bothered by those bugs, than K' general existence!

I'm really enjoying all the random Leona play. Really lookin' forward to playing her in XIII...

There has been a few Mature players that have shown us her potential, besides the infinite. We're seen the DP move used to cross up, and decent use of Ebony Tears shenanigans.

I can see how you can feel that a "meter-build, Infinite using" Mature is not "legitimate" Diavle, but many of them have brought glimpses of her "real" gameplay to the table, as well. Any use of the infinite does kinda poison the feel of any team she's in though, since the huge amount of HD/DM meter building not only affects her, but also gives her team-mates a good advantage, if she doesn't burn them all herself.

I admit, I kinda view players who use "cheats and exploits" like people view the "Heels" in wrestling. No matter what they bring to the table... you're prone to dislike them & their style, because they use dirty tricks. If you really want to see their quality, however, you have to look past that.

But that's not easy for everyone to do!

Oh, and I don't see Chin being a real Anti-K. K' can DP his overhead, Trigger stops his attack roll, K' has much longer limbs, and overall... I think it's more dependent on the players. A Chin will really have to get into the K' players head.

I figured that this was a good time to discuss Vice, since she had a pretty good showing in the video thread today.

The main reason no one is playing Vice, is because Splash, when used alone, can cause an unescapeable freeze for the opponent, if it collides with and attack, right? But used as a derived follow-up to her shoulder charge, it never faces this situation, and is fine to use there.

All a shame, as I thought back during the tech refs, her damage looks pretty nice in a real match, especially when suplimented by an ex move or 2. Seems like an antiair counter queen, almost as much as Elisabeth. 1 EX Use = pulled in to a rather damaging combo.

As much as I like Vice, I never liked her jump-ins. (Jump B had crappy hitstun, no solid crossups, most jumps hit high...), all good reasons why I like the anywhere juggle EX pull-in.

Any players here have any solid time with her, now? Any updated impressions, thoughts, etc?

I have to ask, when have full charge move ever really been USEFUL in a fighting game, before Raiden's here? Especially in high level play? I very rarely have seen anyone use Balrogs TAP seriously (I've seen lots of button binded pressure games, but nothing with default setups...), Makoto's charged Hayate's will NEVER reach max level charge in a serious fight without dizzy or something, Hilde's mostly seemed useful only with button binds...

Have charged button moves ever really worked out? I'm kinda happy to see Raiden's being worth something, I must admit. It's nice to see such a strong technique from someone who isn't a bishonen main character, for one, and even though it's still pretty easy, it still takes more work and planning than the usual "big guy win button" techniques, like SPDs or single super moves.

I could deal with them creating an EX drop out of the current lvl 4, and leaving the regulars to only go to lvl 2 or 3. EX would require both buttons to be released at the same time, so you'd only have 1 insane dropkick, or 2 not-as-impressive normal ones. My main concern is the HUGE amount of damage he dives for no meter usage. It doesn't take drive, it doesn't take EX... even if they figured out a way to make it an HD-mode only combo, it'd feel more reasonable VS the capabilities of the rest of the cast.

And hey, DarKaoZ, haven't see you around in a while! Yo!

I liked watching this particular Leona player whenever they appeared in the tourney; He always seemed to burn some serious meters with her, while his Ash seemed to be plenty strong without the meter useage. It's like seeing 2 charge characters at opposite ends of the power/technique spectrum.

Was also fantastic to see Chin wreckin' house. He's the ultimate enemy of predictability, it seems. As he should be! (-_- )

And Shen's ending was fantastic. He's really a great, straight-forward bruiser. He screams, and things die. I really wanted to root for Andy... but you just can't beat Shen's blunt approach!

Very satisfying fights there, thanks for the upload!

General Discussion / Re: Dune's KOFXIII

SAB-CA: It takes a hell of a lot more than "well, the system is super cool" to pull in completely fresh folks.

Surely. I was saying that I believe XIII has a good groundwork laid out, in addition to a flow of combat that should make it rather easy to approach, for a variety of skill levels and players.

As cool as the UMs are for the tourney crowd, they're still games that, to the average user, look like 1990s-era stuff. XIII is the strongest graphical showing they've got, with a low amount of "ugly jaggies!", and a pretty high amount of style and presentation. A good amount of that extra-crowd that BB pulled in, the type interested in the cool anime aesthetic rather than the depth of gameplay, many of them could probably be swayed into buying XIII, with the proper promotions.

In the end, I'm saying that this is a KoF that SNKP could make modestly successful, even without setting the competetive world on fire, if they handle it right. (Of course, I'd prefer it if they could please all sides...)

The main people who had interested in 1998 and 2002 UM games are the hardcore... but a new game, that looks like a decent competition to it's closest competitors, filled with custom colors that look like recognizeable subjects (Look, Fat Venom! Some dude from Avatar!), big fullscreen ending/cinematic pictures, a story mode with text for every battle, and big, dramatic special moves, amidst fightsthat are pretty satisfying to fight in, even when just learning? This could all go somewhere... IF they hendle it properly.

General Discussion / Re: Dune's KOFXIII
« on: September 27, 2010, 05:15:51 AM »
Dune's points are interesting, but I can agree with Aion's point that it's annoying to hear people complain about the quality of tools/tactics they themselves use. If there are ANY players I would hope could take an A- (or a B) and make them compete with an S+ tier, it'd be a tourney-level player.

And as they say, there's no honor among thieves... or in this case people who are playing for fame and income. It'd be great if people could just decide "This is too strong to -insert community here-, so lets not use it, for now", but, no, that's not how it is.

I rather like the KCE vids in this case, however. They're pretty high level play, but we've also seen some variety every once in a while. I'd like to think it helps provide balance to the "high tier abuse" scene.

Anywho, I think we all can agree that the ball is in SNKP's court now, right? They seem pretty close to drawing in the tourney players, as long as they move the game in a direction that such players feel is worth spending time with, right? I'm impressed with how close they are, considering the end of Dune's convo is still a "I still like the game!". He just doesn't trust SNKP to continue supporting it, the way it seems.

A majority of the game already seems "decent for a casual player", or even to pull in some of the "young crowd". Damage is high enough off fairly easy tactics (especially with Neomax) that KoF neophytes can possibly compete with those who are all crazy strategic with their meter management. Promotion and content could keep this groundwork going long enough, to where players no longer doubt KoF's next installment, they instead ask for, and look forward to it, to see new stages, real new characters (not just upgraded old ones), etc.

With Capcom and Arc both going the way of Arcade upgrades and Digital Downloads, I think it's pretty likely SNKP will try to follow suit one way or another. Indulging in such things, such as easier ways to upgrade an existing product, might be exactly what XIII needs, in order to sway people more firmly to it's side. I just hope we get some real clues to their future plans soon.

The Athena that popped up during the middle of those videos was rather fun to watch. I rather like her HD & Drive cancel combos, and I'm suprised at the moderate use of her keep-away. It's nice to see her played so well up close and far away.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vZG1X7sjZE (KCE 176)- It was great to see Kim while it lasted. It looks to me like he depended a bit TOO much on Hienzan, and I just can't think Hangetsuzan is a great match opener... but I liked what I saw, when he found his groove.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6Vr6z56Soo (KCE 180)- YAY, some Leona play! Good to see her new trick (crouch :b: into forward :b:) workin out so well. And an invincible (EX) Moon Slasher is fantastic to see in action.

All the Raiden VS Raiden was a bit ridiculous, but it was nice how they kinda cancelled each other out. (Even getting double KOs once). I like how much of Takuma's game won't change once his glitch is gone, he just won't be able to start so much, so early.

Thanks for the Vid Links!

Edit: Also, found it rather funny that the only winpose they kept letting show was RAIII-DEN. Eesh.

SNK Playmore Official XBLA Facebook page

That's... err... som kinda Non-Japan-centric promotion! There's also some decent full body shots of the Skystage Artwork, Metal Xlugg XX, and at least Ai and Yuki of NGBC. Also some vids showing off the Skystage character moves, and profile info.

May be a decent place to send questions and comments to SNKP... someone with English speaking skills should be reading there, at least!

Well, that's a new one. What a polished looking Doujin game, too! Love the Fantasy Zone-like shops.

I could deal with this. Would be very good to see SNKP stretching their wings a bit. And I'd love to see them help get some Doujin games into worldwide consumption.

Good info updates, Kane, thanks! That all sounds rather promising... I really like the fact she has some new tricks, some proven, some still just potential.

Keep up the good work, really looking forward to videos of your discoveries with her!
