I watched it.  It's not bad...but there are 3 different continuities basically.  The OVA's, Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo.  The OVA's tend to go more towards action a bit but it likes to hax a lot in the process.  I guess technically Tokyo can be a sequel to Universe but there are a bunch of things that would change and make no sense if that were the case.  I think the only thing that stays the same in all 3 continuities is that Tenchi is of Juraian descent.

I'm pretty sure Tenchi in Tokyo was part of the normal continuation, it's just that most people want to forget it because it's ass.

I'm glad Toonami is gone, even if it did go out with a whimper, good things can't last forever.

Does that even make sense?

Yeah, I'd rather it leave before it became a terrible caricature of its former self. You ever heard of things overstaying their welcome?

He's right.  Besides it's not Toonami we miss, it's the actual shows they played.  Besides...again, Toonami Aftermath.

But hey, we have the internet now, you can download the shows you want and watch them whenever you want. Also, porn.

Anyways, back to Xenogears.

Honestly, I can't see how this got such glowing praise from the press for such an unfinished game...

Until I saw one of this gem from Gamespot,

Quote"Xenogears' reliance on story, subtlety, and mood make it Square's most anime-like RPG thus far, in many ways making the game one of its best."

Translated means: This game is great because anime. l(@_@)l Q(-_-Q) t(-_-t)

Were we really that obsessed over anime in the late 90s? Even the packaging of the game trumpets "20-minutes of hand-drawn anime." (Which is bullshit btw, it's like 5 most scenes being literally a few seconds long)

Alright I'm done now.

Saitsuofleaves

Late 90s and Anime?  Let's see, DBZ, Toonami existing, the boom of Pokemon, I think you can answer that question easily.

Love how you tied this in to Toonami again...

Man, maybe we were that desperate to get any anime, regardless of how bad it was. No wonder we had so many awful OVAs shipped over.

Saitsuofleaves

The Toonami thing was coincidence more than anything in this case.  It was most people's first gateway into anime, and the easiest way to get at it over here in the States without having to hit up the VHS tapes.  DBZ for the most part was Toonami's cornerstone, with Pokemon handling the Saturday Mornings.

personally, my favourite part about xenogears was saving the game right before every level up, and then resetting until I gained one that wasn't like +1 HP, +1 strength.  For every character.  For the entire game.
Former Semi-Serious MK9 player, Mediocre T6 player, maybe one day I'll be a Mediocre KOF XIII player, too

Proto, if it makes you feel any better, Game Pro gave Xenogears a very below average review.

I liked the combat system, and it was hard as hell managing the gear battles because you couldn't heal often as you wanted. That 2nd disc though... ugh. Why.
