Exhibition/Special Events

PU2011 is part of the EVO 2011 Tournament Season

Starting in early January, EVO is partnering with the top grass-roots tournament organizers to form a regular season of fighting games. Our 2011 season will run from January through July, culminating in the EVO World Finals July 29-31 at the Rio Hotel and Resort, Las Vegas. At each stop of the tournament season, players will earn ranking points that will directly determine their seed in the tournament brackets at the EVO World Finals. With literally thousands of players attending the finals, you're going to want to secure that seed if you want to advance far in the brackets.

More info on EVO2k.com

PU2011 is VGF Sanctioned

The VGF (Video Gaming Federation) is a new rating system founded by Xiang from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a long time member of the community and avid Tekken player. Players at PowerUp 2011 will be invited to join the VGF and be acquire a rating for SSFIV, T6, and/or MvC3 that they can follow on the VGF website. For more details than I want to post here, check out the VGF website and PowerUp Podcast Episode #45 with Xiang himself.

Mystery Tournament for Charity

The PowerUp 2011 Mystery Game Tournament will see half of the players' entry fee go directly to Child's Play ($5 to the pot, $5 to the chairty). Child's Play is a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in their network of over 60 hospitals worldwide, and it is one of my favorite charities. So get ready to play some wacky games and feel extra warm and fuzzy because you've given to a great cause spearheaded by fellow gamers.

The Mystery Game Tournament will still be part of the PowerUp Bonus Structure. I will also be able to provide a receipt to prove the donation has occurred after PU2011 has concluded.

VOLUNTEER INCENTIVES

Anyone who is asked, and agrees, to any particular job at PU2011 (including help with registration or running brackets, for example) will receive at least the following:

*$10 flat entry for the whole event
*A FREE PowerUp 2011 staff shirt (the shirt will be different from last year!)

PAYOUT & BONUS

This year we're doing things a bit differently with our payout and bonus structures.

8 - 9 entrants, payout is Winner Take All

10 - 31 entrants, payout is to Top 3 at 70/20/10

32 - 95 entrants, payout is to Top 5 at 55/20/10/5/5 x2 (accounting for ties)

96 - 159 entrants, payout is to Top 8 at 45/20/10/5/5 x2/5 x2

160 - 319 entrants, payout is to Top 16 at 35/20/10/5/5 x2/5 x2/1.5 x4/1 x4

And for those coming in 1st Place, never fear! The PowerUp Bonus Structure is here!

Starting at the 32-entrant level we'll begin taking $2 out of each tournament entrant's venue fee and putting it toward bonus money for 1st Place in that specific tournament. Just multiply the number of entrants in a tournament by 2 and you'll get the bonus amount!

I'm hoping KOFXIII will hit consoles by PowerUp 2011. But we will definitely be having KOF98:UM and KOF2k2:UM on Xbox 360. I do have a question, though. Should the entry fee for those two games stay at $5 a piece, or should it be increased to $10 a piece? I figure there's no one better to ask then the people most likely to be playing!

Also, I'd like to put together a KOF/SNK exhibition at PU2011. Any suggestions?

That sounds good. As far as 360, that may be a little issue since most of the players here in MN still play on PS2 (like myself), but a few of us are slowly transitioning to the 360.

What's up Desmond!

Is the 360 an issue because of version differences, or is it stick/pad availability? Since most of our other games are being run on PS3, we're going to make sure to have at least two dedicated house sticks for the KOF tourneys on 360. I'm afraid we can't do much for players on PS2 pad though, if there are any. They would need to purchase their own converters.

Yeah, it's mainly a pad thing, a few of our players still rock on ps2 pads but when more of us start playing on 360 maybe they will make the holy conversion and it wont be a problem when the time comes.

Sounds good. If it really becomes an issue closer to tourney time we can make a switch to PS2. The 360 is just a bit more convenient for organization.

I saw you posted up in the PowerUp Podcast thread that maybe some MN players could make it down. That'd be great! Do you have any ideas for a KOF exhibition? Maybe putting together a MN team and pitting them against a local team down here in Ohio? Or perhaps some players up in MN have grudge matches that could be sorted out at PU2011.

Just food for thought, we're still a ways off : )

All of that sounds great, I'll contact our players throughout this month to see if any of them will be interested in advance.

We'll be going with this ruleset from the SRK Low-Tier League for MvC2. I found this ruleset in the Naptown Clutch thread, and the individual post was made by BeaTs*:

Banned characters
Magneto
Storm
Cable
Sentinel
War Machine
Iron Man
Black Heart
Spiral
Doom
Strider
Cyclops

Banned Assists
Tron (Projectile)

And with that, MvC2 Low-Tier registration is online!

Take a look at what we need on the TV/Setup Incentive List. First come, first serve! So PM me fast if you're sure you can bring stuff.

The tentative schedule has been updated. MvC2 has moved to Saturday, and ST has moved to Sunday. XvSF has been dropped from the official lineup to make it easier to run head-to-head cabinet tourneys. And most of the tourneys are now starting earlier as well.
