I'm actually rather disappointed in the both of you, not in your performance, but your complaints like sore losers.

Is this referring to me? i was joking about the footage concerning my match. i even said it would be good for me to watch it. i even admitted how badly i lost and apologized how i was so upset with the way i played that i didn't even bother to congratulate realkim for almost OCVing me twice in a row. either way, i can admit that the outcome of my matches were due to my own lack of skill. i'm not blaming it on anything else, so i'd hope to not be included in your previous statement.

No this is for Oscar and RJ.  Sorry, thought it was specific enough but I do apologize.  I wouldn't do such a personal attack unless I knew them pretty well heh.  We're all friends, so they'll prolly pissed at me now but it's all good.

ahh i assumed, since the quote you quoted was in response to something i said earlier, that it was referring to me. no offense taken at all lol. i just like misunderstandings to be sorted out.

on topic though, i can't speak for anyone else, but we all chose the characters that we chose. there are no excuses for that. if anyone wants to play competitively and footage is taken, that's just how things go sometimes. sure, you'll get screentime when you're at your worst, but thats part of putting yourself out there and putting your skills on the line. didn't like how you played or how things went down? play more. get better. when it comes down to it, when a "real" tourney comes around and you decide to play "serious", if you lose badly there are no excuses. when you come to play, you play.

note: this isn't directly aimed at anyone in particular. i just don't see a point to why there was such a fuss before and after this tourney. it's over. play the game.

As a matter of fact I would like to request for my matches to NOT be uploaded since my performance was shameful.

at first, i also wanted to request this (if in fact the matches did get recorded). then i realized it would be good to see where things went wrong, and that 2nd set went horribly wrong lol. i feel bad for not GGing realkim. i was pretty disappointed by how easily i collapsed during the first match of the set. coming off my first loss set with kane, i was pretty anxious to play again after the long stretch of time inbetween (i get hardcore tourney nerves). anyway, i didn't mean to be disrespectful at all. gotta start picking up my game a whole lot more if i want to be on par with everyone else. unfortunately, i can't come as often as i'd like to.

King / Re: King
« on: October 25, 2010, 08:55:12 PM »
If she's low on bars, or (heaven forbid) she's your first character, her best option is to try to keep the opponent away, play it safe, and hope they make some mistakes.

i agree with this. when you're spacing out the opponent, a venom strike can sometimes be a good test to see if an opponent will commit to something that's punishable (jump/roll/EX move/etc). the problem with players i've seen in videos, and even myself occasionally is reliance on it by throwing venom strikes all over the place. pretty soon it becomes apparent that you'll overestimate the recovery and get punished by a beastly HD combo. if by chance you're still alive, you're probably in the corner where king definitely doesn't want to be defensively.

zoning definitely isn't a tool you want to overuse, but like rex dart said, it's definitely a tool worth using given the right situation. in some matchups (like vs clark/goro), it can be advantageous to play in midfield and keep them out to force mistakes. it's all about finding a good balance and when to appropriately switch your tactics. then again, that can be said of all characters.

King / Re: King

Looking this vid:

(Orochinagi has been trying out the game on Paris this weekend) I think try to play King as zoning character in KOF XIII is a fatal error. Looks like zoning is not a good strategy in KOF XIII (and I'm glad for it, I hate spaming fireballs gameplays) and I seen lot of people losing with King in a very poor way just because they try to use zoning and they end on the corner, and KO. I think King players should start to find King's offensive key

the problem is, it's somewhat difficult to start pressure with king. because she doesn't have her old command throw thing (similar to robert's) or a ground overhead, her only real mixup comes from jump-ins (empty jump lows/j.D/deep j.D crossup) or tick throws. she doesn't have any untechable knockdowns besides her throw, and that still doesn't leave her in a good position. coupled with the fact that to do decent damage she needs meter and usually the corner, you'll find that most of the time you're hoping the opponent will leave themselves open so you can punish with either lights into the slide or a s.D into whatever. i do agree though that a king player should learn to be more offensively oriented since she doesn't really have good defensive options. you just have to realize that she has a hard time getting in on opponents to start offense, and even if she does, how much damage you do might be situational.

not really relative to the running conversation, but i'll be at AI a bit tomorrow afternoon till whenever depending on the crowd. i want to try out some other characters just to see how that pans out.

also, i'm probably pushing my schedule by heading out there on saturday, though i probably won't participate.

It's all good, we were getting OT as usual anyways.  You really should participate, but if you're not, at least stop by and show your support :)  (Heck it's only $8 entrance fee, $3 of which goes to AI by default)

Played John 1v1 for awhile today, come to think of it I haven't played him like that in awhile and it's always a humbling experience as he straights you constantly.  I don't really say this enough, but Mr. Kof is damn good.  GG John. =)

damn it, yuhang. stop tempting me lol i'll consider it, if only to rep more vice and king. i'll let you have leona for the meantime (3rd pending).

i hope i'm able to play as often as i have been (once or twice every other week). i've been getting to get to know a few of the regular players and it's been pretty inspiring and a great experience to say the least. i hope you guys continue to build the scene to grow even stronger, though i wont be around to see it next year. i've been noticing a lot of ssf4 players stopping to watch a few matches, and i've been tempted every once in a while to introduce them or at least talk to them about the game. unfortunately, i'm not a very good draw since spectators constantly see me on the losing end lol

I also have the impression that Elizabeth is kind of cheap also, but I would definatelly had to play against her to make sure. She might be just a regular top tier character, wich is just normal in any fighting game.

i'm not really sure what you mean when you say she's "cheap", i think she has solid tools. it's easy to confirm into her DP for easy damage without needing HD mode. plus, her anti-air super is pretty versatile in or out of combos. as far as i know, she doesn't have any extremely good normals or gimmicks. she's just an easy character to play offensively. of course, i'm not any good with her, but that's just my impression. i don't even see people really play her at AI. kinda curious to why that is. it's not like i don't see a bunch of k's every now and then, and i don't think she's nearly that good.

lol good games to both of you guys, as well as everyone who showed up. after you guys left, we had about 8 players (some really good ones, though i didn't catch their names). i'm really surprised that out of my mains, vice did so well. people are really scared of the decide/splash oki. not sure if i'll actually make it out to the tournament (not that i'd do well after seeing my competition), but i'll try to make it out for a little bit. even when losing, i've been having lots of fun meeting new players and learning as i go along.

also, whoever it was that was using ash/kim/kula, please don't rip the stick out of the cab.

if you think about it, if you choose not to play top tier then you're basically choosing to overcome them with whichever characters you choose to play with. nobody picks characters hoping to lose. that said, it's a bit contradictory to feel scorn for top tier picking; it's your choice to not play them. popularity and success are what drive people to pick up and play new characters. you want more variety? pick up a new character and see what they can do. people are getting excited by metaphysics doing testing with ryo and kane's chin. are they top tier characters? not exactly. point is, players are bringing these characters hype so that other people want to try them and potentially use them. with play comes experience and that's how character popularity waxes and wanes (and sometimes tiers change). we find new tricks to overcome battles that aren't in our favor, and when we win, it begins to spread interest across the board.

like i said before, you can't really tell people who they should or shouldn't play. everyone enjoys the game in their own way. of course, if you want to do the ratio thing casually, that's all personal preference. not stepping on anyone's shoes, but i don't even mind fighting a k' all the time (i haven't played against anyone's raiden yet).  if anything, my game might get better because of it. play the game and see where the community takes it. the discussion so far about ratio and tiers just seems like it's breaking up the enjoyment and hype people have for this game. the game, for the most part, is still pretty new. if you're already setting rules and restrictions on characters, what will new players think? how is the scene supposed to grow if the people already supporting it are bickering and in disarray?

Coolio.  Yo, Kane.  I don't like Chin.

Cool, sorry you feel that way.

However, just felt like we should spice it up, I wasn't the only person feeling this way too, Reynald suggested it.

i think tyrannical was saying this jokingly to prove a prior point. i could be wrong though.

also, play more duolon! i'm thinking of dropping leona because i'm pretty terrible with her, but i can't find a solid third that i think i would enjoy playing. having lots of fun with king and vice lately though.

When you guys do have the new patch, check to see if doing HD combos diminish the bar quickly because iI notice it goes down quickly when performing a move

i'm pretty sure it was always like that, even in original balance. in HD mode, whenever you perform an HD cancel, it slightly reduces the gauge, moreso than it normally actively drains.

Letting players win does not teach them anything.

i agree with this. it keeps them from accurately understanding what skill level they're at. complacency doesn't help them build fundamentals or give them the skills to grow. like i said earlier, losing is fine. give them tips and solid advice instead. whether they grow and decide to stick with it is up to their own choice and ability. otherwise, you're saying, "hey, it's ok to not get better."
