The closest Bethesda game i played was only Fallout 3, and if the Skyrim is like it (minus the guns and post-nuclear war shenanigans) i can simply say: it's because is a good game/series.

Although i agree, people overreact about the game, and not only Skyrim, but with every big-hyped game too.

fallout 3 was kinda shitty new vegas was better though although im still not to big on the fall out games

Well i got around 30 hours of FO3, got bored and left it like halfway the main plot because i spent all that time doing side-jobs and other stuff. That's why i'm not too fond of sandbox or free-roam games like Fallout or The Elder Scrolls, they are just "too much" for me.

Well people really like being able to run around a big open world and kill people a la GTA and if you like being able to run around doing wahatever you want/killing whoever you want and also like old school PC/western style RPG's then Skyrim kind of seems like the perfect combination of these elements.

Also the sense of discovery when they find things as Gamepro's Jason Wilson opens his review with this quote
"Wonder has always been at the heart of The Elder Scrolls. The wonder of discovering what sits on a mountain’s peak. The wonder of plunging into a cave hiding in the rock. You should give it a chance.  It's honestly pretty good.  Only time I had a problem was during the Avalon World Tour. 

Besides, it's the origin of Just as Planned.
