Predator 2 is a bad ass sequel. Fuck the nerds who hate it.
Hell yeah, Predator series and most of Alien are awesome.
So it's hard to understand how both AvP sucked balls.
Here's my take on that. Even though I like the AvPs on some levels, they messed up in key areas, areas I don't think even they realize they messed up in. Principle, the best parts of the AvP were the creatures, Aliens were awesome, Predators were awesome (even a shoutout to the Predalien [Hybrid I call him]), but the humans were just terrible. Scientists and small-town occupants are supposed to cut it against the baddest extra-terrestrials ever? Their contribution was nothing more than fodder for the next kill.
The humans set the tone of every movie. The colonial marines (Aliens) and spec ops in Guatemala (Predator) are classic because of those characters. Even "reformed" convicts (Alien 3) and cops in the middle of a drug/street war (Predator 2) worked.
What made Predators work for me was a cast of nothing-but-badasses, like a World Warriors cast of killers. Prometheus will work hopefully due to good stylings AND good characters.
Just keep the characters real, make them memorable ("Game over man!" "Get to the Choppa!" and the like), and let the Aliens/Predators be themselves, at worse you've got a decent movie.
