I talked to romance the next day and he said in casuals and MM's MAD KOF did not use Duo Lon or Chin and he was losing the majority of matches. However, he was downloading Team Mexico and during day 3 Team Cafe ID created a counter to the Mexican Empty Button tactics. The shirt barrier prevented them from seeing their buttons as well as preventing the others from seeing theirs. They also used the headsets and cranked the volume to tune out the empty button tactics. Very smart metagaming from Cafe ID and it back fired on Team Mexico.

I was definitely rooting for Reynalds, Bala, and Romance to pull through but MAD KoF was on a tear that day. Hypest Grand Finals at evo this year without a doubt. MVC3 and SF4 had nothing on that shit.

Pool play was insane and it was definitely tough to figure out which matches to see. At one point we had Reynalds vs Fox, Mr.KoF vs Zeroblack, and Kyabetsu vs BBZ happening at the same time. Kaoru vs Kyabetsu was a good match and I was surprised to see Kyabetsu peace out Kaoru. I have some match footage from pool play so I'll try to post it up later this week.

As for me, I managed to beat JJJ in winners semi's to face Kaoru in winners finals. I definitely didn't know how to handle his Ryo and Raiden. I adapted to his Ryo game 2 but Raiden's overhead took me by surprise and I got sent to losers. I faced JJJ again in losers finals and won again to make it to day 2. I fought Cafe ID Pikachu and lost game 1 after a critical error that could have led to a game 1 win. In game 2 I got outplayed by his king who ended up doing far too much damage for me to make a comeback. I think it was definitely possible to beat him but it just wasn't my day.

I got to play 2 sets against Xian before day 2 pools and I took a game off of him. I wanted to finish game 3 since we were 1-1 but I had to call it quits when they were announcing the day 2 pools.

Nice insight Killey. Hopefully you'll make it to finals next time. I didn't know that the Mexican players had such metagaming. The funny thing is we did the same thing here back then when we had arcades. Some of the KoF machines that we had were not actually designed for KoF, the arcade owners exchange the console in the old KoF cabinets with another arcade machine which does not bring in any profit so the new cabinets had 6 buttons rather than 4. Maintenance, button replacement and stick replacement, we didnt have any of this back then.

BTW why would they want to see their buttons? That's a first for me.

Did Evo inspire anyone here to pick up a new character or two?

For me its Daimon thanks to Kaoru, made me see the character in a whole new light.

It would be pretty funny if this was a factor in why Bala lost to Mad Kof.

I think the Japanese were just plain readable. We didnt see anything new from Tokido and Mago, their game style was really similar to the SoCal players (I am excluding Reynald and Mr.KOF, their play style is Unorthodox with their shenanigans). The Koreans were different in their play style, for example their EX Iori was something new, I didnt see anyone play EX Iori the same. They were not only surgical in execution, they were hard to read; every person who was knocked out by them was baffled.

Kaoru was anything but readable.

Don't pay too much attention to Mago and Tokido, they don't represent high level Japanese play in the slightest.

MadKOF made me give up Duo Lon. I realize now I'll never play him to the highest level.

His performance did make me consider some previously slept on characters. The Terry combo video on the SRK front page showed me things I didn't think were possible with Terry and inspired me to pick him up again.

I forgot about Kaoru. The problem is we didnt see him enough on stream; you can tell he is different by looking at his character choices. The problem is that the spot lights were on Mago and Tokido but I dont think that's the reason we didnt see him on stream. I wanted to see Haregoro the most out of the Japanese players.

My two new characters which I'll pick up are Mature and Dou Lon probably.

What I'm also surprised is that decent solid players like Justin Wong, Ryan Hart and ChrisG  lost both games in their pools.. I thought all 3 would make it out of their pools as winners.. unless they only went to Evo to really try hard at AE and Marvel?

Ryan Hart was put to losers and eliminated by two SoCal players (if that even means anything anymore) although he shouldn't have been able to play in the first place due to him being disqualified for showing up 30min late. He really wanted to play even if he was reinstated back in the losers.

That's an old arcade trick to see what your opponent is potentially doing.

I think the only regret I had at Evo was not getting to play more. There was a point where Mr.KOF was doing casuals and I wanted to get in there but I also really wanted to watch SF4 top 32. Also, I couldn't really find any MM rooms that weren't private to some degree. Also, didn't really know who to ask to begin with but it didn't really matter. End of each day at Evo I was dead tired so I doubt I could have played for too long. lol

i strongly agree. me and james jr chose a steak buffet over going to the MM room haha. i didnt take advantage of all the kof players and i really regret that seeing as how chicago doesnt offer us a big crowd to level up with. but ah well...it was still nice to meet tons of players and dream cancel members. the answer, duc, hrmm...i cant remember everyones usernames off the top of my head...either way, that just says how good of a turnout we had at evo. glad to see so many people playing Chin too, i feel less alone now haha! and there werent as many shirt monsters as i expected there to be!

i got goosebumps during the "K-O-F" chant after top 8 and now i just cant wait for next year...im feeling real optimistic. things will only get better from here.

Yo dawg, last time I checked Tokido made it further than Kaoru. The man got 9th place! Mago is also very very strong, I've played against him personally on a few occasions. Although they may not be the best in the world, please keep in mind that both are very very strong at KoFXIII, and are legitimate top players.

Killey, you should have looked me up.  I met most of the DC players or most of them came up to me because I was wearing the DC shirt.  We would have totally gotten you in the room.

Well what I think Diavle meant it relatively speaking.  Is Tokido and Mago going to body 99% of the US players--hell fucking yes.  Are they good compared to the Japanese counterparts that have been playing since arcade release (vs 2 months before MLG)?  Probably not.  Tenka(wa), Infinity, Oogosho, Dune, Shoki, Wu(Uu?), Haregoro just off the top of my head are strong ass players and will give Bala, Romance, Reynald, Mr. Kof, MadKof a run for their money.

haha yeah i was surprised by the number of chins. i went to evo with him on anchor thinking i could exploit the possibility that not many people would know the match up...it was an eye opener to see just how popular he is.

wouldve been cool to run into you to see your chin, but like i said before i was kinda stuck in the awe of evo (and semi-salty bout just missing out on making it out of pools) and wound up not playing as much as i should have and just spectated/walked around a lot.

I can't speak for tokido, but Mago definitely LOVES top tier characters. It's funny, but it's not just because he wants to win. He legitimately has FUN being cheap. Whenever he's doing those dumb drunk loops with hwa jai, that guy has the biggest smile on his face. No doubt, they are tier whores, but lovable tier whores lol. From what I understand, being cheap as possible is the way they enjoy playing fighting games (at least for mago). You know how some low tier character specialists really have love for their character? Mago seems to have similar emotions for being really fucking cheap lolol it's pretty cool.
